I agree. They'll never meaningfully connect because of Camp Pendleton.

There is also a lot of reserved/preserved land between NY and Philly that has contained the sprawl to mostly just fusing together around the I-95/Northeast corridor. Without that there would be an even bigger grey area.

If New York and Philly joined, it would be the world's largest concentration of obnoxious sports fans.

Not necessarily. There's significant housing growth developing along the I-15 corridor through Escondido Fallbrook and Temecula, which Camp Pendleton doesn't affect. Its hilly in this area, but since when have hills stopped California sprawl? They just build subdivisions on those mountains anyways.

I think it's still debatable whether it would surpass Boston.
