Mexico is not in Central America and even those who don't include as a part of N.A. consider it Latin America but never Central as far as I've seen.

According to the United Nations' statistical divisions it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United...r_the_Americas

Which is what I was basing things on for simplicity's sake (but mostly for the piss take). Should've divvied up Oceania into Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia while I was at it.

The whole continent system is so arbitrary anyways. IMO the division between North and South America should be at the equator.

I just don't see it, Mexico is one of the Big 3 on the North American plate and has much more history and culture than the little countries between it and South America. But who am I? Certainly not the United Nations.

And the continent classification system can be a joke (there is NOTHING that separates Europe, Africa and Asia...NOTHING, get out of here with the Suez Canal) but I thought South America and North America had their own plates? In any event, the land expands exponentially upon leaving Panama and going south to Colombia, so it's as good of a transition as any to go from North to South. That said, it can be and in some places is simply known as America just like Europe and Asia can be (and should be) known as Eurasia. The only thing that separates them is culture. And if not for the melting of the land bridge, all of those continents would be merged with America, which is only 100 or so miles from Russia anyways as it is. Then that leads to the question of whether or not Australia is really a continent or not or just a really large Pacific island.

Where was I? Oh yeah, what are your favorite cities on each continent?

No it's not.

I mean, obviously our geographic idea of "continents" predates our understanding of continental plates, and obviously human geography and natural geography aren't an *exact* match. But the continents are real objective physical features of the Earth.

This thread......idk. Are people naming their favorite cities based on actually visiting these cities? And beyond that....how many other cities on each continent have people visited to which they can compare their favorites against?

If you say that XYZ is your favorite city in Africa and that's the only city in Africa you've been to, your assessment then is pretty meaningless.

Anyway...

AFRICA - I've only been to Capetown so I'll give that continent an INCOMPLETE

ASIA - I've only been to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Istanbul, Bankgok, and Mumbai. Tel Aviv is one of my fav cities in the world so I'll go with TEL AVIV

EUROPE - I'm pretty comfortable going with AMSTERDAM but I've only been to London, Brugges, Lisbon, Krakow, Warsaw, Prague, Frankfurt, and Cologne.

N. AMERICA - NEW YORK CITY

S. AMERICA - Never been - INCOMPLETE

Paris, no doubt, for Europe. I've been to London, Stockholm, Helsinki, st Petersburg, Oslo, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Milan, Geneva, and Barcelona.

In north America, I've been everywhere except Minneapolis and Vancouver. toss up between nyc and the Bay Area.

Haven't been enough other places to comment.

True, I knew of the different plates but still Africa, Asia and Europe are all interconnected and once were with America as well.

Just because you haven't met all Hollywood actors doesn't mean you don't have an idea about whom you want to bed

It's the same with cities IMO..

Panama City is a tricky one. Its N. America but it can sometimes be thought of as S. America.

Well, Richie McRicherson, some of us don't have the time or money to visit every continent, and yet still think it's fun to think about them.

Oh, I forgot one:

Antarctica: McMurdo Station. Its nightlife blows the others away. Or so I've heard.

^Indeed.

Many of us also just don't have the time to visit every city on every continent. I try to get away but it seems these days there's always some reason why I can't. I traveled more when I was in college and law school than I do these days.

These 'favorite cities' threads never work out.

Think of it as a "where would you most like to visit" in lieu of actually having been to dozens of cities in each continent.

Limiting to places visited:

North America: Easy: Portland
South America: Easy: Buenos Aires
Europe: Barcelona or Istanbul
Africa: Fes or Cairo, the only two I have been to
Asia: Hoi An or Ubud, if a bigger city is required, then Yangon because it isn't ruined yet
Australia: Never been

I hate the notion of continents. Specifically because of "Asia". The classic idea of 7 continents is a european invention. The eurasian landmass alone has 5 distinct civilizations. From east to west: Sinic, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and finally Western, which groups the other four into "Asia".

So here are my favourite urban areas from each region on earth:

North America: SoCal or NYC

Latin America: Panama (the country is named after the city, just like Mexico) or Bogota

Western Europe: London or anywhere in the Randstad Megaregion (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Antwerp, Brussels, Cologne, etc)

Eastern Europe: Istanbul or Bucharest

Arab World: Egypt megaregion (Cairo, Alexandria, JR Ewing) or UAE megaregion (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, MASDAR)

Subsaharan Africa: Dar es Salaam or Lagos

Non-Arab Islamic World: Tehran, Astana, maybe Jakarta

South Asia (India): Mumbai

Southeast Asia: Manila or Kuala Lumpur

East Asia: Pearl River Delta Megaregion or Yangtze River Delta Megaregion

Australia/Oceana: Sydney
