The Bay Area, and especially SF, struck me as more American than Vancouver is Canadian. It's all subjective though, I can see how someone would see the Bay Area as more diverse, since there is a larger range of immigrant groups represented.

I kind of know what you mean, but to me anyway that's not necessarily related to diversity.

It's more related to the fact that the national cultural identity is much stronger and more clearly defined in the U.S. than it is in Canada.

Vancouver struck me as very Canadian, with their "100" speed limits posted on the side of roads, which led the US driver in my car (we drove to Vancouver with my host family from Seattle) to say: "These crazy Canadians, they drive 100 miles per hour!"

Brits move to AUS all the time, and vis versa

part of the commonwealth

anyone who has lived in London will realize that Australia is not considered a foreign country by the Brits, at all.

far closer that the US and Canada even.
Sorry but this is complete nonsense.

Well, if you're not a native English speaker, I think Australian and variants of British English sound just about the same. Not as close as Canadian and American (wait, those are different accents?), but quite similar.

Probably because there isn’t one British accent to start off with.

^^And yet a British person, whatever their accent, is immediately spotted in America as soon they open their mouth. Go figure.

I'd say that, to the untrained ear, the most easily distinguished anglophone accents for people around the world are what most people consider British-sounding accents (English, Aussie, South African anglo, Kiwi) vs. American-sounding accents (which includes Anglo-Canadian BTW).

People with an untrained ear can generally make a broad distinction between the two groupings, but may be ignorant of the major differences within them, or not attuned to them.

There are also associated accents which are outliers that people (even the "untrained") may be able to identify reasonably easily: Scottish, Irish, New Yawk, Southern U.S., etc.

Some of these are more easily recognized for most people than the English vs. Ausssie or Kiwi accents would be.

Without any quantitative research, what you allude to would I suspect be down to the permeation of British culture across the globe, and the British diaspora. There just isn’t one British accent, and I think many people would be offended if you were to say Scouse is the same accent to say MLE or Cornish.

Again, keep in mind we are talking about the untrained, unattuned ear here for the most part.

My kids are not native English speakers but do understand English fairly decently. They can't tell an English person from an Australian person based on accent.

Heck, my kids are Canadian and can't even tell an Anglo-Canadian from a "Middle American" accent.

Well, to start with the accents are not the same at all, an Australian in the UK would be instantly recognisable as such as soon as they opened their mouth to speak, as would a British person in Australia. Maybe to outsiders it may be less obvious but surely the question is whether it is obvious to the people involved, which it very much is. I can't tell the difference between an Angolan Portuguese accent and a Portuguese Portuguese accent, but Lusophones probably can, which is what matters.

In terms of sports the most popular sport in Australia, Aussie Rules football, is barely played at any level in the UK, while the most popular sport in the UK, (soccer) football is a relatively minor professional sport in Australia. Some other sports are popular in both, others are more popular in either one or the other.

Some celebrities are famous in both countries, there are many more however who are well known in the UK but not in Australia or vice versa. There are probably as many Canadians as Australians who are famous in the UK while there are many more US Americans who are famous in the UK, I'm struggling to think of many famous New Zealanders!

Is music any more shared than between any other Anglophone nations, I'm not sure it is. :?

Mozambique, Jamaica and Bangladesh are in the Commonwealth too, I'm not sure what relevance that has to the subject.

Yes, Brits move to Australia all the time, they also move to Spain, to the UAE, to France, to the USA, to Singapore and many other places. Mexicans move to the US all the time and Americans move to Mexico all the time, does that mean they should get scrubbed from the figures?

As somebody who lives in the UK I can assure you that Australia is seen as a foreign country by pretty much everybody, a foreign country with which the UK has strong links but a foreign country nonetheless.

Obviously due to language, history etc then an Australian living in the UK isn't as 'alien' as a Zambian living in Japan but that's not to say they are not a distinct and recognisable community.

My kids are not native English speakers but do understand English fairly decently. They can't tell an English person from an Australian person based on accent.

Heck, my kids are Canadian and can't even tell an Anglo-Canadian from a "Middle American" accent.
I'm from Upstate NY and apart from the occasional "aboot" even I can't tell most Canadian accents apart from northern American accents but the difference between the variety of "British" accents and Aussie accents are pretty stark. Even within England alone, the accents very considerably. Brummie vs. East End London cockney might as well be two different countries.

British and Australian accents are pretty well represented on TV/ Film for the average Joe to know the difference at this point.

This might help with rough estimates on what percentage for those born in various countries were in fact born to British parents:

For what it's worth, most Japanese cannot tell the difference between a British and Aussie accent. Especially the CNN Asia / CNN Japan announcers: they're all Aussies, but none of my staff and even sometimes my wife cannot on the spot confirm "Brit or Aussie?"

As a kid, I always thought the generic Australian accent sounded like a type of British accent.

To my American ears, Aussie accents sound much closer to British accents than they do North American ones. It's the non-rhotic nature of both which makes them sound similar to us rhotic North Americans (says the guy from Boston...).
