In 2021, the oldest residential highrise on the campus - the now "old" Sid Richardson College was replaced by a more modern structure.

Earlier in the month, the student newspaper and other outlets reported that the old college would be demolished to make way for two new buildings and a severy.

Rice intends to build two new residential colleges with an accompanying servery, President Reggie DesRoches and Vice President for Finance and Administration Kelly Fox announced in an email sent May 19.

The old Sid Richardson College building, opened in 1971, will be demolished as “part of this project,” the announcement added. The demolition will likely start in June 2023 with the removal of debris continuing into the fall semester, Fox later wrote to the Thresher through a spokesperson. Each new college will be constructed using some reclaimed building materials from Old Sid, according to Fox.

“The two new colleges will be interconnected by a central servery, with the first college located where Old Sid used to be,” Fox’s spokesperson wrote. “The second college will be positioned closer to Wiess College, adjacent to [South Lot] and [the] road near campus Entrance 4.”

Rice Coffeehouse had previously intended to relocate to the servery inside of Old Sid during the construction of the new student center. Fox said the administration will provide additional information later this year, and a representative from Coffeehouse did not return a request for comment.

The construction of the new colleges is expected to be completed by Fall 2026, and each will have a capacity of over 300 beds, according to Fox’s message. Currently, McMurtry, Duncan and Sid Richardson Colleges have more than 300 beds, while the other eight colleges have between 232 and 291 beds.

Exciting news about the two new college buildings that will be going up. Talked with a worker from Anslow Bryant who is the GC company building them both and also the servery. It will be two 12 story concrete buildings with the servery in the middle of them.

Demolition of the old Sid Richardson has started. JTB Demolition got the demo contract.

Old Sid is gone.

Old Sid Richardson College is gone. I talked with an Anslow Bryant worker who said they are going to keep the foundation till they start building, said they don't want to create a huge water filled pond. They will remove it when they are ready to start. He confirmed Henning Larsen is the architect, it will be two similar but slightly different 12 story buildings with the servery in the middle. They were in the process of removing the plywood covering the windows of the new Sid Richardson.

This new project was designed in 1964 and finally received approval 59 years later.

What impact will the construction of the two new residential colleges and servery at Rice University have on the overall campus layout and facilities?
