Ample meeting space, too.

State Senate passed the car-rental tax 22-0 to assist in paying the annual debt service for the BJCC Overhaul. State House just needs to pass it and it's off to the Governor.

Rep. John Rogers is planning to be the fly in the ointment, a U.A.B. employee no less.

I would say I'm shocked, but I'm not.

I understand that people are scared/worried about what will become of Legion Field. But, honestly, IMO the pros outweigh the cons with this project.

Legion Field isn't going to go anywhere without a solid plan for its reduced and continued use, or demolition without it being properly memorialized.

I don't think he is worried about Legion Field, he wants the money the county is putting in to be used for paying down the sewer debt.

Topgolf and Uptown — along with other BJCC improvements — could perhaps attract some entertainment options that may seem a far-fetched currently, according to Snider. These could include “an upscale cinema such as Alamo Drafthouse, Bowlmore Lanes, perhaps a House of Blues-type operation,” he said.
“These types of additions in and around a downtown convention and entertainment zone have occurred in other cities — so why not Birmingham?” Snider said.
Why not indeed. A high end theatre and/or bowling down there would push Uptown over the top.

Construction on the Vesta high-rise (fronting Highland Ave) has reached the 4th floor.

I read the headline in the Birmingham Business Journal that 20 Midtown landed a 39 Million dollar refinance loan and of course its behind the paywall, but I hope this means they will be starting on Phase III real soon.

Behind the paywall, it says that they've received design approval and are planning to begin construction soon.

Outstanding, because I am hoping for a 5 Guys burger joint there.

The time is right for the RSA to build a skyscraper office/condo building in downtown Birmingham. They did a great job building the tallest buildings in Montgomery and Mobile (currently the tallest in the state). It's time to make the investment and build another jewel for the state. Birmingham is ready.

Well the Stadium bill passed the House.

The bill now goes to the Full House. A vote could come next week.
If it passes there it goes to Family Ties, Growing Pains and then Silver Spoons. Maybe someday this thing will get passed.

As long as the House passes it, I don't see any reason the Governor wouldn't sign it. This thing just needs to get done. I'm tired of having had this same conversation over and over again for decades.

If the House passes this and the Governor signs it, then the City is the final piece of the puzzle. The council said funding from the City was contingent on the tax being passed and the BJCC proceeding to the bond market. I can only think of a few thousand ways this could blow up in our faces...

Just got home from work and I noticed from my balcony a 3rd tower crane. It looks like it's just east of St Vincent's here on the southside. What could it be???
It just came to me, it is probably the new Lakeview Green condo complex.

I think that's a safe bet. I believe I read in the BBJ that all of the units have been bought up.

I'm beginning to get a bit concerned that condos in downtown are getting too expensive. I've seen a few on Zillow that are "reasonable" around $200,000. But, I don't want Birmingham to wind up like other resurgent downtowns where home-ownership is out of reach from those looking for units around $175K or $150K...

I agree completely! Birmingham needs a new signature tower! C'mon RSA!

Well, you know what they say, "Askin' ain't gettin'." They'll probably easily come off 10% for qualified buyers. Maybe more once things cool off.
