There should be serious consequences for this kind of historical vandalism. Something tells me that the developer won't even get a slap on the wrist.

Was there really no way they could have taken the facade down brick by brick to reuse it? Even if not in the same way... did they have to crush all the bricks? Mindblown.

Anyone know what's happening with the new building?

Parking has always been allowed on that site. Yes, likely a holdover from its gas station days. Bodegoes used it as a parking lot in winter and as soon as it got nice out converted it to a patio every summer.

Likely what inspired Cordova to start using part of the Woodbine parking lot as a patio. Great idea.

so the entire site is zoned for parking as an approved use? they’re now parking on the site of the old bodegoes building as well, not just the former patio/parking area

The issue is that the building is unstable.

No one could get close to it to do that kind of work without first shoring up the foundation and exterior walls.

That kind of work costs millions of dollars and takes substantial amount of planning and construction.

It was deemed not financially feasible.

I remember a developer knocked down an old house on St. George Street in Toronto about 30 years ago when it was supposed to be reused in the approved condo design. The city made them rebuild the house. I wouldn't recommend that here because this was unintentional and any project in that area would presumably be on a very tight budget. It's certainly a big blow to the area though.

Why are the projects in that area on very tight budget?

I would guess that it would be because the anticipated returns on such projects would typically be fairly low, which is possibly why this particular project didn’t get off the ground for so long.

So heartbreaking.

The only non-depressing angle I can take from this situation is purely poetic.
The building was named for Thomas Scott, whom Riel and his provisional government hung for treason (at upper Fort Garry?). The powers of the day saw to it that Riel was himself dispatched, and then Orangeman erected this edifice.

Now, on the 150th anniversary of Manitoba, Riel is mythologized as a local hero, and this particular building starts falling over and has to be demolished....

I'm not quite sure that's fully a coincidence

Yup, they definitely could have done it, it has been done - they are getting a free pass on this one.

I guess some Canadians doubt “those in power” to much. Adequate doubting is reasonable and it’s a great representation of Canadian culture/mindset which I believe has evolved to this state with interesting & rich history. But I wonder if sometimes there’s too much of it...

The danger is that it becomes a dismissive knee-jerk reaction that removes the responsibility of thought and judgement. The lure is that it is easy and convenient. You see it with the annoying "fake news" label that gets thrown around. "All news is fake, so I am free to avoid dealing with unpleasant reports I may disagree with".

Lease signs are already down on Antiques & Funk and the ceiling and lighting are being worked on. Something is getting ready to move in already. Good sign.

Who owns it now? It used to belong to Ron Chatfield. He had a suite on the top floor, his office (he was a manufacturers agent) on the second floor and a chandlery on the street level.
