wow Beaudry! thank you for the full story behind that scene from TTP. i had always asumed that the building he came out of, (the one with the room for rent sign), was the clayton, as it was next door to the central. Great catch on seeing the Belmont!....(cinematic directorial license extreme indeed!).

so not only is this a a mob crime noir yarn that takes place in a small mid-west hay seed town, (that just happens to resemble downtown LA in it's noir-ity finest), it is also the very first time in history, that someone pointed a camera looking south on clay, north of 3rd street, and figured out a way not to include angels flight in the shot!

obviously this was done so that theater goers wouldn't know that this mid-west small town, was in fact Los Angeles. What on earth would a funicular be doing in a plains setting? Once they show angels flight, well then everyone would know that this was actually not a small mid-west town in the hill-less plains.......................................................

(never mind..........nothing to see here......move along............)

As always, this site is a treasure trove of photos and history. If anyone had the time, interest, and know how to do it, I think this website shows what could be a really great format for arranging many of the photos on here.

(Of course, Vergara's photos are amazing too.)

Also, the You-Are-Here site also has a page arranging photos by map location too.

Paul Revere Williams

Well, Charles Luckman, yes, but also William Pereira--and/or James Langenheim working for them when Pereira and Luckman were allied--Welton Beckett, and, not least, Paul R. Williams are all said to have had a hand in the design of the LAX theme building. Williams had quite a Hollywood following, was a master of modern and defining takes on historical styles, and had a compelling personal story, all worth investigating. Among other distinctly Angeleno buildings, he gave us Perino's on Wilshire (now replaced by the hideous "Perino's Apartments").

That bottle of champers is for you, sopas.

I'm hoping that you meant you had a fondness for the old restaurant... not that you live at Perino's Apartments...NOT that there would be anything wrong with that... hmmm I'm reminded of a friend of mine who was telling her shrink about a "horrible" apartment she looked at in a "piece-of-@#$& building"... she had to change shrinks....

Oh, no, I was just quoting "Mommie Dearest." I've never been inside Perino's, and regret that fact. And I agree, those Perino's Apartments are hideous.

Great interior shot. I wonder if the Perino's scene in "Mommie Dearest" was actually shot there, or if it was a studio set.

Thinking of that film made me think of Miss Joan herself, and then of course Miss Davis, which made me think of this house:

172 S. McCadden Place

Google Earth

Which made me think of this:

Sometimes I'll drive by that house and hum this tune.

^^^Once again amazing work Beaudry.

I didn't realize you could see Calle de los Negros in that 1931 photo.
I thought it was long gone by the 1930s. I also didn't know where it was exactly.
Your Sanborn maps have been extremely helpful.
I can't find Sanborn maps with that high of a resolution (enough to read the names).

So please keep posting them.

Interesting Paul R. Williams post as well GaylordWilshire.
It's absolutely great his home still exists.

I guess thoughts of Steve Forrest in the room between "J" and "K" in the plan above have trumped any memory I might have had of Joan's claim on Perino's... (Btw the way, this website is kind of hilarious, and not totally out of the realm of Los Angeles architecture: http://www.joancrawfordbest.com/magnewmovie.htm)

Perino's in 1940. Did Perino's move to a different location, or was this building heavily/tragically remodeled?

I love that little bar called The Bachelors. I wonder if it was a gay bar?

A gay bar? I dunno...did it serve...cocktails? (Ba-doom-ching!)

The original Perino's was at 3927 Wilshire, beginning in '32. I really like how the sort of French Norman thing meets the sort of Streamline Moderne thing. That should happen more often. This was, before becoming Perino's, the Hi Hat restaurant, and was one of the famed Brown Derby rests. from 1931-1932:

LAPL

And became Perino's for 17 years. Then they moved -- the 4101 Wilshire Perino's was 1949/50. Here's 3927 now; the building that replaced it from 1959:

I know! And of the myriad of mid-west small town anomalies, they're going after a racketeer named Eichelberger? Last time I checked, there just weren't that many, you know, Eichelbergers on the plains...especially in 1952.

So among the greatness of The Turning Point is the shootout on Bunker Hill. The scene starts atop the Second St. tunnel, at that concrete railing that's now so sadly gone...

My DVD is made from a third-generation VHS, evidently. What I wouldn't give to see this on the big screen on a newly-struck print.

What I find amusing about this is that they made and effort to keep LA City Hall out of the frame...I mean, I'm pretty sure the People of Peoria would recognize THAT...

USC

That's the Fashion League Bldg at the corner of 2nd and Hill in both pix. It came down (as would the whole block bounded by First, Broadway, Second and Hill) in 56-7 so that the State Bldg could go up in 59-60. Which has since become an empty pit in the last few years. Anyway.

I won't go into the whole plot thing, about how the cop-dad of the prosecutor is the dirty-cop in bed with the bad guys, or why he's about to be shot, or why the guy who shoots him gets his: see the picture! So this is about fetishistic slavering o'er the locations --

Walking up Second from atop the tunnel:

Hey, that's the Argyle http://www.onbunkerhill.org/node/174
http://www.onbunkerhill.org/node/181

cal state library

...where the cop goes into the laundry and gets shot and all sorts of bad things happen...

...here's a capture of across the street...

...which is the Claridge Hotel, just above the Northern.

(Uh, in the image below, the Argyle and friends have been demolished. Ignore that.)

A bad guy jumps on the getaway truck, SE corner of Second and Olive. Therefore, over his shoulder, NW corner? The Mission.

BLAM! Gettin' shot outside the Rio Grande at 425 W. 2nd. Ouch.

both, cal state lib

And just to be egregious about it:

To see it in all its glory (I know we've seen this before, but, you know), go here.

Here's a different view of the Beaudry House (later El Centario Cafe) on New High Street.

calisphere

I found this among photographs showing the unsanitary conditions in Los Angeles during the bubonic plague outbreak of 1924-25.
In this particular photo their intent was to show the shacks ('cliff dwellers') behind the Beaudry House.
(If you look closely, there is a man in the bushes staring at the photographer)

Below: Here is the companion photo showing the 'cliff dwellers' on the other side of Beaudry House.
GaylordWilshire posted a version of this photo earlier in the thread ( page #57, post #1132)

The 'plague study' photographs are fascinating. They show us seldom seen parts of the city.
Some are sad, like when the children pose, and wave to the photographer in front of their 'unsanitary' homes.

Abject poverty this close to the civic center is startling.

Wow, very amazing photos, ethereal, all of them. I like that they are indeed pictures of seldom seen parts of the city. In fact a number of them are pics of locations in Little Tokyo.
