It's not clear to me what effect a rapid transit system would have on Winnipeg's economy, other than to deplete it of the resources required to fund the system. It's a feel-good project, not an economic one. Feeling good is important, of course, but maybe there are cheaper ways of cheering everyone up.

IMO, it's a short term pain for a long term gain. Even that could be reduced through alternative financing methods (such as the TIF, as stated by the OP).

Don't sell yourselves short W-Peg.
What can I say Boris, this is a town chocked full of pessimists and underachievers.

It can be very frustrating living here, this town used to dream big.

I know we can do it again..

Not to mention, they also did it when their economy was in the crapper.

Hey look, another transit study.

Transit study in works
By ROSS ROMANIUK, SUN MEDIA

Tell the city where to go with its transit system and one-way streets. No, seriously.

City hall wants to know what Winnipeg bus riders and motorists want and need in public transit and its overall street system, and why. And it will launch an extensive study within months to get the answers.

"It's a fairly big project," Coun. Jenny Gerbasi (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry) told Sun Media last night.

"We need a really accurate picture of the transportation needs and transportation habits of Winnipeggers. Then we can build around what riders really need as we expand the service."

The study comes as Winnipeg Transit works with city hall -- slowly -- to plan the early components of a two-phase, $270-million rapid bus system that would rely in part on designated routes for so-called "articulated" coaches, two of which are to hit the streets this year.

Little has been confirmed as to how the $800,000 probe -- the latest of several local transit and traffic studies in recent years -- will be carried out, though politicians say this one is long overdue.

I could have told them what's wrong with transit and the road system for only $700,000.

That complete plan is huge! Could you put a point on each line with a note indicating what sort of rail it is?

I have the Henderson line elevated along the Disraeli. I don't know if that's sufficient, but it'd be cheaper than submerging it, anyway.

NDP Announces Socialist Rapid Transit System (SRTS)

With all of the transportation infrastructure and the desire to recycle old products as a means to save the environment Gary Doer has annouced his vision of Rapid Transit.

Gary Doer suggested this was the best rapid transit his government could support. "Manitobians should be proud of this proposal. Don't forget to vote NDP."

Its funny how Cubans would much rather drive 60 year old American cars than much newer Lada's.

Elevating it may hinder the redevelopment of Point Douglas. The whole system would be light rail with dedicated corridors. Most of the corridors are either rail corridors or boulevard corridors where two lanes in the middle of the street are taken.

Here's a map I made of all the corridors. Corridors Map

nice concept but it should go further up regent not just turn and end on that rail line.....

the one that goes down pemida should go all the way down to the floodway gate and turn back

the line going up portage hmm run it all the way to the race track for the ex and race events

and dispite the hatred towards waverly west we should have a line that goes out there...

I dunno, with the station right there I can't see if being much different from submerged rail.

You'd pedestrianize that much of Sargent? Ambitious. It'd be pretty cool to run streetcars down a street like that closed off to traffic, though.

I find it funny how you guys are coming up with this whole Map layout for RT. Looks like you guys are really putting in the time and effort on this.

You going to have this system implemented anytime soon?

Are you doing it over a cuban and some cognac........

Something a little more green considering what day it is.

I actually planned out most of this as part of school project. I've been continually modifying it since
