I'm glad Alessandra is starting up, even with the design change.

Houston still ranks highly for corporate relocations. Only Chicago does better:

Houston ranks as a top city for corporate relocations and expansions

I wish we could more of these alongside the university instead of across the highway, nevertheless, a step forward to keeping more students near campus.

"We will have water features for the children and an outdoor pavilion we will be building that will seat 4,000 to 5,000 people. The $1.2 billion development, which is scheduled to break ground in May, will include 1 million square feet of Class A office space, a sustainable park, outdoor fitness areas, more than 250,000 square feet of retail space, restaurants with the capacity for organic farming, two hotels and more than 1,200 multifamily units.

I guess they're not scared off by Marvy Finger's dire predictions.

Here's another student-housing project, this one has a better location.

Developers are planning a new student housing project near the University of Houston.
Aspen Heights, an Austin-based off-campus student housing developer, submitted a plat application to the city of Houston for a multifamily project on the southeast corner of of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Old Spanish Trail, just south of MacGregor Park.

The 6-acre site, owned by NewQuest Crosswell, is under contract and is expected to close by mid-year for an undisclosed price. The existing strip mall, which includes some tenants and vacant properties, would be torn down for redevelopment if the student housing deal moves forward.

3300 Main: Soil testing. PM Realty Group purchased this block from the Midtown Redevelopment Authority back in November. No word yet on what will replace the current building on this site, but something is being planned.

The building will house two separate concepts – a Hampton Inn with 168 rooms and a Homewood Suites, which will have 132 extended-stay rooms with full kitchens.

The company also owns a space adjacent to the Hampton Inn/Homewood Suites property, along La Branch between Capitol and Rusk, that Massad had previously said would be the site of a not-yet-branded hotel.

But Massad told the Houston Business Journal he's tabling plans for that project now.

Rumor is that Midway purchased the site.

A note in an online for-sale listing, however, indicates that the facility will be “vacated by the USPS in the second quarter of 2015.” No buyer has been announced publicly for the 16-acre property, which was previously the site of the Southern Pacific Railway’s Grand Central Station.

The complex’s signature feature is its 1962 5-story concrete-finned main building and plaza (pictured at top) by Astrodome architects Wilson, Morris, Crain & Anderson. The USPS has noted that it “anticipates demolition” of the building as a result of the sale.

I think the post office site would be a perfect location for the high speed rail station.
