I think if the tree was going to be saved it would have been relocated a couple of months ago when the other large tree was moved off the site.

Sad indeed, even though I know its time has long passed. But I've been mourning that block ever since they turned Waterloo Brewing Company and the diner on the other end of the block (the Mustang?) into parking lots.

Progress is great until they come for my old watering holes

They could have saved the bricks and are going to rebuild it to spec.

I can't find a permit for tree removal for the site. I did a search going back to 2000 even for all 4 streets bordering that block. This probably means the tree is not big enough to be a protected tree. Every other tree permit I've seen were filed only for protected trees. It's unfortunate, but it looks like this tree isn't protected. The tree protection only applies to ones that are large enough.

Here are the demolition permits for the site.

I was wondering that, too. I was surprised to see them dropping them from the scaffolding, if they were planning to save them. Still, I know enough about old bricks to know they're pretty solid and can take a lot of abuse before breaking.

I'm pretty sure this is the case. The workers were hammering the bricks out one by one, and it's hard to see in this photo but they were being neatly stacked near the South East corner of the building. I'm sure they will use them to make a replica of the original facade, if not they would have just used heavy equipment to knock the whole building down.

You all are freaking out for no reason. The facade is being taken down carefully, indicated both by the scaffolding present at the site AND the information posted above. If they were just ditching the building, there would be no scaffolding in the first place -- there would just be a wrecking ball.

Someone just go place a sticky note on the tree with "Dibs--mine" and they'll leave it alone.

They are taking the tree down this morning.

Just FYI, all your photos are publicly shared. After viewing the tree photos google+ suggested I check out your Eeyore's and Cruise albums. Might not be a big deal but thought I should let you know.

On the positive side, once the building is finished, they'll be planting a dozen or so trees around the building as a part of "Great Streets". That's not a bad swap if you ask me.

Tree was probably weakened or possibly even diseased.

But that tree was so majestic over a greyhound + cigarette coughGhostBarcough #rip! I am glad they're planting trees along the sidewalk. Hopefully those sticks survive the cold.

They already have the machines on site to start drilling the holes for the support columns? I would have thought that they needed to dig much deeper first. I thought that this building supposed to have underground garage parking?

I think they use those machines to drill the holes to insert the steel support columns used to shore up the sides of the parking garage hole. The same machines were just used to do that at the 500 W. 2nd construction site.
