Correct, however you can have a downtown filled with beautiful buildings, great streets and tons of potential but if you have no people, it will still be dead.

This article is saying that with the recent influx of people when the Jets are playing there has been a bit of a bump for restaurants and bars in the area. The addition of a couple new hotels and a WCC expansion will lead to more people being downtown (even temporarily) and will boost business as well.

Hopefully we can encourage more office based businesses to relocate to the core and boost the retail and restaurant business during the day.

Add more people here on a daily basis you will more construction, parking becomes scarce, traffic gets heavier, transit becomes more popular and more people buy condos in the Exchange, St. B, West Broadway etc or houses in the West End and Wolseley further gentrifying those areas.

At the end of the day it comes down to adding people in the core on a more regular basis. The rest will happen on its own.

he downtown sports, hospitality and entertainment district (SHED) forming around the MTS Centre is starting to catch fire, with new restaurant chains clamouring to set up shop and eateries already there reporting a surge in business tied to the Winnipeg Jets.

Retail leasing specialist Ken Yee of Cushman & Wakefield said five national restaurant chains have approached the firm about leasing one of the two restaurant spaces in the Longboat Development Corp. complex being built next year on the north side of Portage Avenue across from the MTS Centre.

I'm surprised there isn't a popular deep dish place in Winnipeg. Having eaten several in Chicago this summer I'd rather have this instead of a regular pie.

Pizzeria Uno in downtown Chicago is one of my favourite restaurants of all time...

Very close man, this was on the little balcony at Duo at the other end of the same block as Uno! Uno was lined up at the time and the balcony at Duo had just opened so nobody knew about it.

I started making homemade deep dish pizza a few years ago for my "Hockey Night n Deep Dish" parties. I always figured that the return of the NHL would make such an idea a worthy pursuit... I've even got the perfect name selected for a Winnipeg-based deep dish joint. (I'm not telling!).

However, now the NHL *IS* here, the restaurant frenzy has begun, and well... I don't have half a million dollars kicking around, nor the time to start such a venture right now.
I'm sure it would be popular... provided that the people like my version of deep dish

My favorite, and i have been there a couple of times is Gino's East on East Superior St. The only problem is it is always jammed full.

Theres a reason for that aside from being popular; Deep Dish Pizzas can take up to 45 minutes to prepare and bake. When I was there, I went to Lou Malnati's and pre-ordered while we waited for a table. It was the only way to go.

But imagine this concept in action in Winnipeg:
A Jets-themed Deep Dish Pizzeria sports bar in a old brick-walled exchange-district building, people filling out all the tables, drinking beer, eating appies while watching the game (Hockey, or NFL, whatever)... thing is, a 45-minute order turn-around will get most clients hot. However, if you're busy watching a game, drinking beer, eating appies, you won't NOTICE a long wait for your pizza... meanwhile, another round of drinks gets ordered. Maybe also do a promotion: Everytime the Jets score, run to the bar for a (minimum beer price) draft beer. Or have everyone pull a puck with a name on it... free round to the table whose guy scores a goal... $100 gift certificate for a hattrick. Throw in some other games, promotions...

Can I have your endorsement, Mr. Chipman? I'm afraid I don't have money for advertising on the boards at MTS Centre just yet...

I'm completely happy with just the beer part, but I get your point!

Our waitress ensured we knew we would have to wait for the pizza. I merely responded "Is it ok for us to sit and drink beer in the meantime?"

Stayed at the Hard Rock on Michigan this last summer and hit up Giordanos at the Prudential Centre twice. Ya the wait times are long but worth it. The first time in Chicago we did hit Pizzeria Due so I know where you are coming from Riverman it was awesome.

It's not THAT bad. There's a McDonald's across the street and Jeffreys and a Pizza Hut and an A&W just off the top of my head.. but yes, compared to the rest of the city it's a bit under-restauranted perhaps.

Yikes. If that's the best response ... talk about a hardship post.
