I'm too embarrassed to tell you which movie it comes from.

I think the TV show "24" tried to enforce that quote, and as an Angeleno, it would make me so annoyed.

Back in the mid 80's, Mom tasked me with picking up my brother from the Greyehound bus station on Alameda. I didn't know where it was at the time, and the only Alameda I was familiar with was in Burbank. I kept asking her for specific directions (which she was horrible at), and she said "Take the Golden State, exit Alameda, it's right there (it isn't right there). I spent an hour on the 5 in the wrong part of town, even stopped at an AAA office in Burbank, got angry and came home and told her she can go get him, I don't have the $$$ for more gas in the car. (Gas $$ came out of my small allowance).

And now I'm annoyed just remembering that day!

The purchase, that Bill in Glendale mentioned earlier, also included a 2nd lot behind the 91 year old bldg.

As I mentioned the purchase was for a number of lots, the one that you noted, and a bunch of parcels along Glendale and overlooking Echo Park lake. I know the parcels along Glendale were undeveloped for many years now have newly built apartments.

ETA: ER, you're right about the quality of their window coverup; I think I could make out only one or two of the windows on the old streetview.

#1 Does anyone know what theater this is? (the best clue is probably the Corinthian column on the left)

#2 Is the little girl, third from the left, a very young Judy Garland? She kind of looks like a miniature Judy.
(I ask because the sign says "Garland")

I think this is a 1946 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible. Mr. Sarthou must have been driving too fast. The 1950 Sanborn Map
shows a warehouse at 115-117 N. Grand, so the numbers 117 may have been a casualty of the crash:

Las Margaritas Restaurant is still trading at 2914 Whittier Boulevard (it appears in the CDs back to 1968), but most of the other buildings have gone. The Mexican-American Opportunity Foundation was at 2834 Whittier.

Seems like the theatre would be the RKO Hillstreet--gone now from the swc of Hill & 8th (there's a Shake Shack there now)...although I can't find a corresponding Corinthian column in any views online. The movie advertised at left appears to be "Ladies Must Play" with Dorothy Sebastian, released August 1, 1930...which would be before the Gumm sisters became the Garland sisters ca 1935 (and then broke up).

With regard to Phil Latoska, I do find him listed in the 1910 census in Walla Walla, Washington as Phillp LaFoska. The handwritten entry looks like LaTosca. He is listed as a Theater actor. The entry shows him as French-Canadian, born in Canada in 1891. He was a lodger in a rooming house in that census.

KO was the Keith Orpheum, a vaudeville circuit. The Los Angeles theater was the Orpheum which had formerly been the Grand Opera House. It was leased by the Keith Orpheum Circuit in 1894 . The circuit later became Radio Keith Orpheum, or RKO in about 1928. Spacing of the lettering in the part of the vaudeville sign would indicate that the letter "R" for radio preceded the K and O, so the date would have been some time after 1928.

I originally posted a modified version of this image in post #27557 to celebrate 8 million views. It clearly shows one of the columns in the foyer of the RKO Theatre in 1931. There are also references to Vaudeville acts.

Thanks Flyingwedge : this car crash gave us the oportunity to have a frontal view from the first time on NLA (I'm almost certain) of this stretch of North Grand Avenue. We had only side views (with this garage front) from aerials or from far on Court Hill being cleared. The dark building on the right is the Chestmere Apartments at 202 North Grand Avenue and Court Street. One of the last to survive on this area. I remember wanting to see what was in the distance behind the car which starts at Grand and Second in the famous 1940s short movie « A Drive through Bunker Hill » and never could... until now.
