But it's not 1,776ft by any measure unless you pick some completely arbitrary points...

It is strange. If you go from the lowest entrance to the highest piece of steel that is not a crane.1,797' No one has said where 1,776' begins and ends on this building yet!

1776' should be to the top of the beacon below the lightning rod

I thought that it was 1,776' from the center of the building to the top of the spire. Is that right?

I read somewhere here that from base to lightning rod tip was 1787', with the rod supplying the extra 11' starting at the spire's apex.
This is hellishly confusing.

This debate about the building's height is really silly. Depending on how one wants to measure it, 1WTC is either the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere (to spire / antenna) or second tallest (to roof, highest occupied floor, parapet, communication ring...etc). Either way it's a great tower and we should all be proud of it regardless of where it ranks in height.

Agreed. I just got back last night from visiting New York City and saw this building from the memorial. It is truly a stunning building. Also, what an awesome city.

When the top 2 sections were on the ground and the lights were on it looked like the red lighting was shining up from below. Were those LEDs shining up and illuminating that area.

The various heights depend on where ground level is. The building isn't built on a level surface. The official measurement is from the North side of the building at 1787 feet to the top of the beacon, not including the lightning rod. It would have been 1776 feet from the main entrance.
It's not measured from the middle of the first floor, despite the claim being passed around by some self described experts like Matt Chaban.

Thanks for the info. I think the lightning rod is 5' tall for a grand total of 1,792'. Just a little more info here the building is listed on aviation charts as 1,792 AGL and 1,806 MSL. The ESB is listed as 1,454' AGL and 1,505' MSL. Aviation charts include lightning rods.

I really don't like certain angles of the new 1WTC. It becomes way too triangle-ish like the John Hancock Center (and nothing like the old towers). See the recent Ann Thompson photo of 1WTC against Yooperann's flickr photo of JHC.

I always did declare, that it bears a certain resemblance to that Hancock tower in Chicago. However that's a nce building too.

I like the tapering when it is viewed directly on. When it's viewed at a weird angle it can look kinda strange...

Don't worry about it! If the height is 1787, that is the year the U.S. Constitution was ratified. So the cheap kitsch symbolism remains intact!

OTOH, if, as someone mentioned, the true height is 1792, we are all screwed! I think that was the year of the Whiskey Rebellion or something!

Or maybe it was the year G. Washington became president! If so, we are all safe. Whew!

Meanwhile, ask yourselves just how many untold numbers of completely innocent people have been slaughtered by U.S. drone strikes in Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and ask yourselves what cheap kitsch buildings those folks will have built to commemorate their dead. I reckon none of you will like the question, much less the answer.

I like this building from every angle. The tapering and shape morphing is what makes it awesome, in my opinion. When viewed head on, the triangular front gives it a very bold, muscular look. When viewed at an angle, the tapering makes it look very tall and elegant.
