Look at this:

Now imagine streets and streets in whole entire neighbourhoods filled with this. That's Montreal. You look at the other places in this thread, and maybe you think, "gee, that's sort of interesting from an urban perspective," and then Montreal comes along with its fucking awesomeness, and you realize you were kidding yourself.

This thread needs more Montreal. This forum needs more Montreal. Where's habfanman when you need him?

I agree with you. That's exactly why I started to post the pics from my walks around the different boroughs (each 'quartier' separately) of the city recently. So far : Pointe-Saint-Charles, Sault-au-Récollet, Saint-Henri, Old Montreal...

I also think that Martin_Mtl is doing a damn good job showing the best angles of Montreal.

Speaking of awesomeness, here is gorgeous Petite-Bourgogne, one of my favourite places in town

The walk started at Georges-Vanier station :

The houses around the station are pretty, lots of trees, good relationship with the street too :

Then headed to the center of the neighbourhood to find good old Sainte-Cunégonde Church :

Awesome streets, my favourite being rue de Coursol :

Architectural details constantly make you look up

Pretty streets, pretty housing. Lots of those houses were demolished during the Drapeau era. Fortunately, many blocks were saved in Petite-Bourgogne...

Civic building

Old plants converted into offices and lofts, along the Lachine canal

An update from the past few days. Dirty mobile pics...

Video Link

St. John's, Halifax, and Calgary all have nice magnet designs.

I've always wondered how many units are actually in these. They cram 3-4 into the small, two-floor ones.

I wish I knew why we all walked in the middle of the street. We all do it.

This is the nice end of the one of the more infamous streets in St. John's. It's the edge of the cliff if you drive along it to the horizon. Near the horizon of this photo, look to your left and it's a sheer drop. You can see down onto the stadium, downtown buildings, etc.

This isn't a back lane, just happens to be the backside of these two buildings. Normally houses would be built on this side right up against the retaining walls, but they didn't here for some reason.

The panorama setting turned Ayreonaut into a Banksy.

The little door on the right above goes into Magnum & Stein's. One of above-average-but-not-upper-scale restaurants downtown.

The view is of the alley itself.

But the food... a Screech burger. Touton for bun, screech sauce, sliced beets underneath the pattie, fantastic. With cod bites.

And, of course, nowhere is far from a bar...

For the Quebecers/Quebecois... a superette tour. Is it a dep?

They even have... I forget what they're called...

(Shelves were bare because a storm was forecast. We freak out every time like it's not every other day for us).

And a couple from freezing cold commutes this week...

Timely... don't worry, they've included it in official promos:

Sort of. It's on Circular Avenue, which is the very next street after Empire Avenue (our 1949 ring road) when heading downtown. So it's the very edge of the pre-war city but nowhere near (by our standards - it's only 5+ minutes, really, driving) the core.

Does anyone know what exactly downtown Hamilton is used for? In some cities it is a prominent white collar office district, trendy or high-end shopping district, tourist, entertainment, or hospitality district, while some are institutional with things like government or museums, etc.

Or perhaps in Hamilton it's a mix of various functions?

It might not look like it but Downtown Hamilton is home to thousands of white collar workers.

Shopping and tourism? Negligible.

In terms of entertainment, the City Centre isn't really much of a draw, though Hess Village, located just a few blocks west of the core, is a pretty serious magnet for party-goers.

James North, right downtown, has become quite well known for its art galleries as well as hosting some pretty decent cafes and eateries. Every month they host an art crawl culminating with the 'Super Crawl' in the autumn. Pretty epic stuff.

In many respects, Hamilton is moving in the right direction. Still lots of work yet to be done, however.

Hamilton Place Theatre, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and Copps Arena are all located downtown as well.

Oh that's interesting to hear. I guess I was confused since most of the highrises in central Hamilton look like residential (compared to say, Winnipeg) but that can be deceptive as office jobs don't necessarily require large highrises.

Hamilton has a fair number of midrise and lowrise office buildings. The south side of Gore Park has a bunch of moderately sized office buildings, then there's a few attached to Jackson Square. There's also a couple hospitals in the slightly extended core and some office buildings on James South.

Hamilton never seems to get super dense with anything, but manages a moderate density almost everywhere, which really makes the downtown hard to define (unless you just accept standard city definitions, but most of the time those are arbitrary).

That was indeed a great, retro-esque Vancouver set! Nicely done. Also, it's good to get a reminder of what rain looks like. I have been starting to forget after these last few weeks

Hamilton's difficult to pin down, to define. It really is a unique city.

Canadians do love to draw comparisons between similarly sized places like Halifax, Winnipeg and Quebec but one mustn't forget that the aforementioned cities are provincial capitals. Hamilton is not an island but a city amongst many that happens to lie just 50-odd km from Toronto in the most densely populated part of Canada. It's complicated...
