Great pictures!

I really like the landscape shots. Also, the row houses in St. John's are really nice. A lot of cities would kill for some character houses like that - and these houses are probably the norm in St. John's.

Not sure about the downtown though. From the distance shots, it doesn't look all that impressive for a city of its size. I could be wrong though, if I saw some of the closer up shots.

Thanks for posting the nice St John's pics. Looks like you got most of the essentials. ^ The whole downtown area is full of row houses which range from plain boxy to rather elaborate, and the styles are mostly unique to St.John's. You are right, the 9th pic is Gower Street United Church, which has an unusual design, and used to have a tower & spire above the clock which was removed in the early 1900's. The Anglican cathedral (7th pic) had a planned 150' spire which was never built.

Hey everyone, thanks for the positive feedback. St. John's really is a unique city. Had I known that I would be posting those pictures on this forum, I would have taken more pictures of downtown.

I found downtown St. John to be fairly busy for a town of its size. There is an abandoned department store downtown, but other than that there were plenty of restaurants and shopping options in the city.

I was a bit surprised by the harbourfront (I was expecting Halifax), but that being said St. John's is a working port and there really is no space for a tourist friendly harbourfront.

What was especially cool about St. John's was Signal Hill and Cape Spear. Most cities would die for vantage points like that not to mention National Parks like that.

I would encourage other people to post their St. John's photos here.

Various shots of St. John's from my past several trips back home.

Great view of a cruise ship coming in through "The Narrows", I didn't take this photo, but it is amazing!

View of the Battery, a fishing village within St. John's. People originally built houses here to be the closest to the fishing grounds.

Driving through the Battery, streets don't get much narrower than the ones you can find here.

Parked inside the Battery.

Looking past Fort Amherst from inside the Battery on a foggy warm summer morning.

A dreary early morning fog hangs over downtown.

Cape Spear, the most easternly point in North America, do you see the old man with the pointy nose in the cliffs?

View from next to the Cape Spear Lighthouse, the fog is swallowing the mountain side and windy road that brings you out to the cape.

Typical St. John's "Jellybean" row houses

Winter in downtown St. John's, winter is a strange season in the city; you can have several feet of snow on the ground one day, the next day it's warm, rainy and melting away, only to come back again the next day

February wind is howling off the mighty North Atlantic on top of Signal Hill.

Three mainlanders drowned in this area of Cape Spear last summer. Don’t play with Mother Nature; I don’t care how strong you can think you can swim, the waves have been swimming a little longer.

Mid day on George Street. Later in the evening when most bars are closing in North America, George is at is peak! People all of all ages celebrate shoulder to shoulder on the world's biggest little street.

O'Rielly's Newfoundland Irish Pub.

With 42 bars on a one block street, George Street has the most pubs per square foot of any street in North America.

George Street late in the night, or early in the morning, depending on how you look at it. My camera is seeing the world the way I am by this time, dark and blurry

Early morning on Water Street, we were walking back from an afterhours club in downtown as other people were walking to work. For a city of its size, it has unsurpassed nightlife!

Water Street (formly Lower Path), the oldest street in North America.

Old meets new, meets ugly!

How many cities do you see an old man playing the accordian in the street

View of Signal Hill and Cabot Tower, with a steady stream of ships coming and going servicing the offshore oil rigs.

Some of the best traditional pubs in St. John's can be found hidden within small lanes between the busier main streets.

View of the downtown and east end from "The Rooms"

Having a lunch after hiking out to the top of Red Cliff.

The Basilica of St. John The Baptist.

Heading through rawlins cross into downtown.

The east end of town.

Aerial view of the city near the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), I didn't take this photo.

A sign of the times.

Wow, great set of pics MrChills. The one with the cruise ship(a big rascal) is awesome. Probably won't, but I'd love to visit this city some day. Thanks for the pics.

What is/are "The Rooms"?

Love St. John's, been there a few times. Only issue is a shortage of decent hotels downtown. The Fairmont is overpriced and the Delta is getting a bit shabby.

Nice photos MrChills.

I remember walking past the "Duke" one evening.

To promote things to do in St. John's, the city has a very good "haunted hike" that costs only $5 per person.

Thanks to everyone for all the great pictures. For those who haven't, I would highly recommend a visit to this fine city. Cape Spear and Signal Hill are amazing, but just driving around the city is a lot of fun, though beware of some crazy intersections!

St. John's is not a highrise type city, which I find really contributes to its character - and boy does it have a lot of character!

Also, I think any drive around the Avalon Peninsula is just great - we drove the 'Irish Loop' - the northern part. Spectacular.

Being in BC its awfully far but I don't wan that to stop me.
More thjan anyother city in Canada I would want to visit St.John's.
My father has been all over Canada several times and still says that St.John's is by far his favorite city in the country.

St. John's is a unique city and well worth the visit. That being said, I would plan my trip during a season that does not end in "inter".
