Wait what? Like the logo lights on Scotia? They look like they're on in the ALS photo, unless I'm completely mistaken..

GWL has a contractual obligation to keep the lights on for Scotia, this isn't something they can just turn off to save a few bucks, this isn't a condo strata.

Also since when was Scotia Tower a 'landmark'.

It's actually quite prominent when looking at downtown from East Van, I can see the Scotia sign from my balcony near Broadway and Fraser. (which I like and wish I could see more)

It's also one of the better towers of that era IMO.

The lights on the guy wires of BC Place were on last night.

Saw them on a while back, too - so it looks like they have been fixed(?)

Lightbulb Vancouver needs to "lighten" up

Most streets in Vancouver (there are exceptions) are lit only by the principal light on the main light pole. This has to suffice for lighting the road, and the pedestrian sidewalks.
In many cities, there are almost ALWAYS two lights, sometimes three; the principal light for the roadway, then a lower, mid-post light for pedestrians, and often even a third light.
I think Vancouver is often rather dark, even downtown and that this is a matter that could and should be addressed. In NYC, they're getting very creative with it.

Yes, like that. However, if this were Paris or most other European cities, the policy would be city-wide, not just in certain locations. Now that it's started, I'm sure it will spread further.

It's only Friday and Saturday nights in August. It would be cool if they'd regularly let people vote for different pre-programmed displays.

I appear to be mistaken. It seems like this was temporary. For a while, they had been turning them off late at night, but now they seem to be on all the time. Sadly, I can't say the same about Trump Tower; those lights are on very rarely, which is a real shame.

Doesn't really matter who makes the decision to turn the lights off, whether the landlord or the tenant. It still happens, just like with the HSBC Building on West Georgia. The lights were turned off there after condo owners across the street complained about light pollution. It's not unreasonable to assume that the same could happen with the Scotia Tower and other buildings with prominent signage.

Regarding landmark status:

From dictionary.com:
Land·mark / ˈlan(d)ˌmärk. Noun. An object or feature of a landscape or town that is easily seen and recognized from a distance, especially one that enables someone to establish their location. Synonyms: marker, mark, indicator, beacon, cairn.

I believe Scotia Tower qualifies.

Lightbulb street lighting and CBD ambience:an observation (IMO)

The lighting in the CBD on streets like Burrard, Georgia, Howe, Hornby, Robson, Alberni ..... is sufficient, and the poles on which they are placed are functional and unostentatious.

That said, they are perhaps too functional, too basic, and too close to an adequate amount of light, being a little above the limit. To add to them or replace with more styled materials
might well be to pour $$$$ into mediocre material.

Nevertheless, and without providing visual examples that would bias this statement one way or another, thinking of perhaps Houston, Montreal, Dallas, Toronto, -the list goes on - §*§*§* ...
to consider investing in major CBD streets, not only for the sparkle and "snazz" they would bring with more styled lamp posts and higher light amplitude, for the (built ASAP) for the present and future aesthetic investment ... even with sidewalk light strips.

Examples would be, starting easy: West Georgia outside the Trump and Shangrila down to the Bay on Georgia, along Burrard past Robson, past and including "soon-to-be the Rodeo Drive" Alberni Street, Howe, Hornby, Burrard down past the Cathedral, Park Place, Bentall Complex to the MNP and venerable Marine Building, with aforementioned
more "worked" and designed light posts , double-level lighting, street height (as currently) and mid - or 'sidewalk level' on all lamp posts on all streets in the designated CBD area.
(Yes, I know, $$$ ...) but it would "up" the central city vibe big time. ... ... ... And this is a city that could use it.

A week or two ago, Talk Vancouver circulated a survey regarding light issues in the city.

Typically, those surveys have been a distant early warning system to alert us that the city is about to "listen", then ignore the survey and then bugger off and do what it intended to do all along.

Talking about lighting, a few weeks ago they had the lights on the skytrain along a small section of North Road that were installed on the skytrain columns, but I haven't seen them on again, they were just doing them in white at that time.

So very true.

Don't forget when they publish the supposed "feedback received" its almost always almost taken word for word from their own propaganda literature pieces.

My friend actually helped design this.

Would love to see more displays like this in Vancouver (along Granville, on the Nordstrom Building, on a new art gallery, on the London Drugs Georgia entrance, the Stadiums, the new Casino etc...).

Still amazes me how lacking we are in lighting displays for such an overcast city for much of the year.

It's really quite a shame how few city create lights like this exist in this city, I heard 50 some odd years ago we had neon lights everyone, I've seen pictures and it looked amazing, wish we could do that again since now aside from summer the lack of nice lighting is hella depressing.

Sometimes when there are props for movie making on certain streets, the lighting up of the props and the street furniture they use are way superior than what the City currently has. So sad when I see the movie props and lighting being taken down. Take for example the stuff going on at the Art Gallery square: it was beautifully lit up for a shoot yesterday....

I agree 100%. That is some terrific lighting feature that I, unfortunately know, Vancouver will never buy into. Being on a 'Greenest City' drive, underscores any of that sort of contemporary art feature from ever happening here, very sad. But please, keep posting this kind of activity, and maybe, just maybe we may have a forward thinking Mayor and Premier that would back it up. Fingers crossed. Great Post by the way!
