By Craig Patterson

UK-based household and technology ‘reinvention’ brand Dyson will open its third standalone Canadian location at Calgary’s CF Chinook Centre in September. It follows Dyson’s first Canadian showroom that opened in Toronto in late 2017, as well as a Vancouver location that opened in January 2020.

Well, not all that imaginative, but it’s better than nothing.

Southcentre Mall to add three tenants in former Sears space

“Southcentre Mall has announced plans to subdivide the space left vacant by the closure of Sears in 2018.

Rather than seek out a single anchor tenant for the 235,000 square feet of retail space left behind by the department store, the Oxford Property Group will begin by renovating 100,000 square feet of the space in the first phase of its redevelopment, which is expected to create 200 construction jobs.

Three major retailers — PetSmart, Winners and Dollarama — will take over the first floor of the space of the mall...”

Nordstroms is shutting all Canadian stores by June of this year. In Calgary there is currently one at Chinook and a Nordstrom Rack in Deerfoot Meadows.

This is a huge shock! What happened?

Those will be big footprints to fill in both locations. Please don’t tell me Chinook would accept a stand alone Zellers store in the Nordstrom space. That brand would bring down Chinook’s reputation as a high end mall!

I would think they would redevelop that space. Turn it into smaller retail units

Does a mall typically make higher sales per square foot with one large anchor or with smaller units in the same space?

This might be a great opportunity for a store like Whole Foods or some other grocery chain along that caliber to take over (a part of) the Chinook space! There aren’t a lot of options in the area!

Well the grand opening of Zellers in Calgary has come and gone. Has anybody been? Is it worth all the hoopla? One advantage I can see to this is that it might draw more customers in the Hudson Bay store itself and perhaps the Zellers customers will also shop in the main store as well!

Calgary Co-op rebranded and changed their logo last November....it looks very familiar to the logo Edmonton Transit used from the mid-1970s to 1990s.
