Amusement Parks are going out of business all over the world. The business model is broken. You need a catchment in the tens of millions to justify the investment in building the type of attractions people over the age of eight expect today. Throw in a six month operating season and the entire proposition is doomed.

I agree with you. I was just responding to Spring2008 who was speculating otherwise.

The people who stay in NE hotels are choosing to stay where they need to be.

A bungee jump off the stony trail bridge over the bow. Market it with the zipline at COP as a summer adventure package.

Tourist spending reaches record $1.7 billion in Calgary

It was a record year in 2014 for the tourism industry in Calgary.

The city hosted more than eight million visitors who spent a record $1.7 billion — an increase of 6.3 per cent from the previous year, Tourism Calgary said in its annual report, released Tuesday.

The annual report for 2014 said:

– more than 3.1 million hotel room nights were sold;

– more than 1.2 million weekend room nights were sold;

– there were 48,142 sport-related room nights contracted;

– there were 69,077 trade-related room nights sold;

– there were a record 59 major culture and sport bids won; and

– 68,305 jobs were supported by the city’s tourism industry.

Tourism Calgary chief executive Cindy Ady said the organization’s focus for this year will be music.

“For 2015, our theme is going to be the year of music, because we obviously have the Junos coming (in 2016) and as well we have the National Music Centre (opening in 2016) which is a brand-new attraction to Calgary,” said Ady.

“From a brand perspective, what we’re trying to do is say there’s a new sheriff in town in the streets of Calgary and it’s going to be about music.”

Tourism Calgary announced Tuesday it will bring the national tourism industry event, Rendez-vous Canada, to the city in 2017.

“Rendez-vous is where the entire country’s travel trade comes to a single place. They have a massive event and you get a chance to showcase what’s new, what your attractions are and what kinds of things they can package in their tours,” said Ady.

“Even though they all come to do their business, it gives Calgary the opportunity to showcase what it has.”
