Collars and ties

At the same time the man on the right who is not quite as elderly is dressed very elegantly in the 1930s fashion and even 1940s.
This contrast between the two men made me think of an advice in a book which studies screenplays : « Think to characterize visually a (bad or not) mature character who has a stiff an obtuse mind dressing him 20/30 years well before the other characters who are in the fashion of the time of the action. »
I remember in « Quai des Brumes » (a classical french movie of 1939) where the bad and stiff (Michel Simon) is dressed 1910' (same collar and tie than in the photo above) and the smart and very flexible gangster (Pierre Brasseur) has the same suit than the man on the right. I guess there are lots of examples. One example I fondly remember (to stay on the noirish side) is in « High Sierra » (Raoul Walsh) which action takes place in 1940. There is a doctor who helps the mob, he's dressed like in the 1870s ! His haircut too. It has to be a wink of the eye to the brotherhood of westerns and noirish movies...

If anyone here is interested in getting reproduction road signs, here is where I started:

The guy who makes them uses vintage equipment to produce accurate custom reproductions, including the appropriate colors, logos (auto club, CA div. of highways,) etc., porcelain enamel on nice heavy gauge steel.

This is the first time I've come across an ad like this.

ebay

The New World Silver Fox Co. offices were located here, in the Brockman Building.

By coincidence, I happened across this photograph that shows a sign for Schleicher Silver Foxes.

I guess I never stopped to think where the fur for all the fur coats in Hollywood came from.

And then there was the great chinchilla bubble of the 1950s ... it was hard to find a magazine back then that didn't have an ad in the back touting the $$$ that could be made by raising chinchillas in your back yard.

I often wondered where all those little critters ended up when it burst.

Cheers,

Earl

New World Silver Fox Company contracts for a guaranteed return on investment looks like some of the speculation craziness that just preceded the bursting of the 1929 bubble. I suspect they didn't survive the earliest part of the depression even though Hollywood kept dressing in furs for another 50 or so years…

I'm very impressed with what I've seen so far.

Hill Street north from Jefferson, 1925

a closer view/west side of street

east side of street

Not sure what that 'base' is. It looks like it's missing a traffic light.

I also wondered what that was a little further up the sidewalk.
-on closer inspection/ it's three kids playing marbles, or reading a fragment of newspaper that's littered on the ground.

If you what to explore the photograph yourself go here:

On the 100th anniversary of the Mt. Lowe Incline this guy drove his car up the mountain.

Here he is driving through Granite Gate on July 4, 1993. Pretty cool huh-

interesting comment/explanation.

Here's an earlier view of Granite Gate, showing a Pacific Electric Mt. Lowe Railway car.

I'm pretty sure we've seen this postcard before/I'm reposting it for comparison to Mr. Rippens 1993 foto-

I found this earlier this week on ebay.

Venice Beach 1915

I'm guessing that contraption near the building is an amusement ride. (at first I thought it was a pump for the plunge)

There's been progress at the former California State Building site.

-yes, still waiting for them to dig up that cache of art deco chandeliers and lighting fixtures. -fingers crossed.

Beaudry's recent excursion down to the site.

Remember the goat-gland doctor?

USCDLWBH

I've done a little more investigating into Dr. Clayton E. Wheeler's goat-gland clinic at 3173 Wilshire Boulevard. After genteel beginnings and questionable medical practices, the house just got weirder, and that's even before Nixon darkened its doors. The full story of the Emilie Brodtbeck house is now here: http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...e-see-our.html

That's a strange angle on the remaining structure, more akin to the alignment of the old hall of records and the funky-angled streets that once ran nearby, than the State Building. That corner of the State Building property was mostly lawn. Could this be the remains of an earlier building?

I've been Googling for a good picture and this is what I came up with:

From a gsjansen post WAY back in the thread.

Looks like the third Times Building was on that corner spot, from 1912 to 1938.

From a post by FredH, here is the third Times Building in 1936, with the State Building right up next to it at the left edge of the photo. The side of the Times Building is clearly angled funny.

FredH's post, photo source LA Times

So, what do you think? Is that the basement of the 1912 Times building in the new photo? I'm thinking that it is. I guess they just tore it down to ground level in 1938 and left the rest!

Edit: One more photo:

LA Daily Mirror

The State Building is under construction while the Times Building sits on the corner, with other smaller buildings next to it filling out the rest of the block along 1st Street. The Times Building is clearly shaped just like that basement in the modern photo, including that extra chunk protruding in the back corner.

Fantastic find, Prophet. It looks like that is the foundation of the old Times building. Or...what was on the site before the Times? I suppose it will be bulldozed without anyone but NLA noticing.

Another shot show the angled north side of the Times...
