Wow, Austin must have enormous city limits. Isn't the population there like 800,000?
For 2014 its a little over 900k. Its growing fast. I believe its 250 sq miles or so, which is like 4 times bigger than the DC city limits. By 2020, its should be on track to hit a million if it grows the way it is, if not more. Yea that DC shot is amazing. Feels a lot bigger from the air.

Man, the size of Texas cities is just unreal. Looked up Austin; its density is ~2,700 ppsq mile, which is the lowest of all the other Texas cities. Dallas and Houston each ~3600 and San Antonio ~3000. Weird... I've been to Austin a couple times. Someone down there told me it was just under a million people. I honestly thought they were mistaken because of its more quaint downtown feel. But wow. I guess I greatly underestimated that vast size of the Texas cities. I wouldn't be surprised if all 4 Texas cities are in the top ten soon. Crazy to think of San Francisco as being a smaller city than Austin or San Antonio... really illustrates how meaningless a city's population figures are.

Urban areas, which disregard arbitrary municipal boundaries, are the most important metric. Use urban areas, and SF is indeed a far bigger city than San Antonio or Austin. If SF had annexed its suburbs like those cities, its population would be around 4 MM (while leaving the east bay as another large city, 2-3 MM people).

Right. Or, San Francisco is what, 50 sq miles? Measure 50 sq miles from the center of Austin and you'd get what, like 135-150,000? Seems about right... but yeah. Same principle more or less.

Which suburbs did Austin annex? I thought it was a big city pretty much in its own right. But I'm not sure.

Austin has done some annexing of developed areas (Circle C for example with about 50,000 residents), but most of the growth in population in Austin has been inside of undeveloped (or about to be developed) land in unincorporated parts of Travis County and a bit of Williamson County through traditional annexation methods over a 40 or 50 year period. It is is the way most sunbelt cities have expanded since WW2, and not unlike the way NY, LA, and Chicago expanded in the first half of the 20th Century. Austin does not try to annex large suburbs, and it is now pretty much surrounded to the north, northeast, northwest, and west by suburban municipalities. Circle C was unincorporated when it was annexed back in the late 1990s.

I took this photo of Lake Ray Hubbard just outside of Dallas about a week ago and happened to catch another American Airline Boeing 737 in flight in the photo.

^^^Those Vancouver aerials a few posts back...Amazing.

It's not that I forget that Vancouver is that beautiful, it's just that when I'm not living there, I have to pretend it doesn't exist or I'll be sad all the time.
