City Council settles on a route for the Downtown Streetcar

Plans for a new streetcar system servicing Downtown Los Angeles keep chugging right along, with the LA City Council unanimously certifying the project’s environmental impact report at its Tuesday meeting.

The council also agreed on a route for the streetcar, which will travel in a one-way loop that begins at 1st and Broadway and proceeds south to 11th Street, where it turns west until Figueroa; it then heads north up to 7th, where it heads back east before one final northward climb along Hill Street. Another proposed route would have taken the car along 9th instead of 7th Street.

Below Wilshire, a subway station is being dug

Three pretty good new pics of the working taking place under Wilshire to excavate the future Wilshire/La Brea Station for the Purple Line Extension. The first segment of the project is under construction and will stretch the Purple Line subway from its current terminus at Wilshire/Western for 3.9 miles with new stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega.

We are also aware of another issue important to the community: the possibility of adding new Red/Purple Line Stations to serve the Arts District, where many new real estate projects are being built or proposed.

The Covina City Council has approved a project to build 117 new, three-story townhomes and a transit center for buses on Citrus Avenue at the site of a closed Kmart.

Dubbed Covina Forward, the project, located at 1162 N. Citrus Ave. will also include a community and business center. The project site covers 10.66 acres at Citrus and Covina Boulevard and includes three properties, including a former day care and the Kmart, which closed two years ago. The property is surrounded by residential neighborhoods and a commercial shopping center to the south.

Foothill Transit will operate the center, which will provide bays for up to six buses. There will be about 380 parking spaces in a parking garage for commuters using existing local bus lines that service transportation to Metro’s Gold Line and the Metrolink station. The center will also facilitate a new express bus into downtown Los Angeles.

Elon Musk wants to dig a tunnel to ease L.A. traffic.

Elon Musk is apparently turning his focus from the heavens to the Earth, proposing on Twitter that he plans to dig a tunnel that could reduce Los Angeles traffic.

The often outspoken Chief Executive of SpaceX and Tesla Motors Inc. last month told his 6 million Twitter followers: “Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging....” He dubbed the project “The Boring Company” and added “I am actually going to do this.” Early Wednesday, he backed that up, tweeting that he had made “exciting progress on the tunnel front” and intends to “start digging in a month or so.”

Considering Musk’s ability to turn science fiction into reality — he has, after all, landed a rocket upright and made electric cars cool — it’s tough to know whether this is a serious proposal or a quip from a tech world luminary who has previously suggested that reality is not real.

When asked the location of the tunnel, Musk tweeted that it will be “Starting across from my desk at SpaceX. Crenshaw and the 105 Freeway, which is 5 mins from LAX.” Tunnels generally have two ends, but Musk offered only one, heightening the intrigue.

Several improvements and changes in the works for the Orange Line

•The first project involves getting the Orange Line through intersections more quickly, either by building grade separations (i.e. bridges or underpasses) or other improvements.

A technical study is now underway and is looking at five different intersections as candidates for a grade separation (Fulton/Burbank, Woodman/Oxnard, Van Nuys, Sepulveda and Reseda). Once a final study report is approved by the Metro Board of Directors, this multiyear construction project would be built to rail standards to make it easier to convert the Orange Line to rail. Other improvements are also being analyzed, including crossing gates and traffic signal upgrades. Groundbreaking is planned for 2019.

•The second project is more long-term and will convert the Orange Line to light rail. The groundbreaking on that project at this time is proposed for 2051 although Metro continues to explore ways to accelerate the larger Measure M projects. I know that getting your mind wrapped around ‘2051’ probably isn’t super easy and/or super fun. But it’s worth considering that the more near-term upgrades should shave minutes off Orange Line rides and make it easier to convert the line to rail.

If he's really serious about building a tunnel and the good guy he says he is, he should build a 4 lane by pass underneath the 110 connecting to the 101 essentially creating a freeway underneath downtown LA.

If it's a rail tunnel he wants, isn't that already being built?
