Unfortunately I doubt the LES tower will be 1,000'+; probably in the 750-850' range.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Maybe with a nice crown and some retail at the base the tower can break 1,000'.

So many supertalls going up in New York, but Its always annoyed me seeing 280m/290m towers going up, Its a bit of a missed opportunity. Looking at the New York construction threads, if all the 280-299m towers were bumped up a few metres there would be many more supertalls, that's what they seem to do in china to increase the number of supertalls, but in western countries it's always just about economic viability and not arbitrary height targets, still if New York bumped up its 270m+ towers to 300m it would be incredible, but I understand that it's only skyscraper nerds like us that care about the difference between a 290m tower and a 300m one

^^^^^^ I think where number one when it comes to 200-299m though . I hope eventually we will be the super tall capital. Keep in mind its only 2013. A lot can change in this city on crack. 2014 for all we know might give us something even more spectacular than what is proposed. New tallest, eh, never know...

It's inevitable that New York will get a mega tall, and the way New York is, once one is built, more will follow, if that post office tower in Chicago gets built it might speed up a mega tall proposal for New York, local pride and all

When it comes to proposals, I always repeat the mantra "don't count your supertalls before they are hatched"

This. This. This. Untill something's actually entirely financed and rising out of the ground, it's just a potential tower.

Even a rising core isn't a guarantee of anything, in London, one of the city towers, a 288m tower called the pinnacle, was built up to the 7th floor, then put on hold, now their is a concrete core sticking out in the middle of the city CBD, allthoe it is soon to resume it shows you can't take anything for granted until its topped out

Sort of, but varies by city. In NYC, financing usually follows groundbreaking, rather than the other way around in most cities. No one building in Manhattan isn't also putting big money on the table to get things going.

Another potential supertall site just got announced, on 57th Street.

Supposedly Vornado is planning a skinny tower at 31 West 57th Street, near 5th Avenue. Not many details yet, but will include at least 31 57th Street and two adjacent buildings.

This site has huge air rights from a recently acquired property on the 58th Street side, so could go very tall, but no specifics yet.

If only the Chicago Spire proposal was resurrected and moved to NYC. The city definitely has the demand for such uber-luxury units. Hey, if it can't be built in Chicago, build it here.

I like that New York is getting some company in this current wave of supertalls now.

We got u/c or prep supertalls in NYC, LA, and San Francisco, and now serious proposals in Philadelphia and Miami. Its possible 4 or 5 American cities will be putting up supertalls at the same time. Perhaps a bit less serious for now but looking through their threads their are also rumblings/visions for Houston, Dallas and Seattle that could potentially end up as supertall/near supertall type stuff.

So far Chicago is sitting this round out but you never know when that could change, it is Chicago after all.

New York is leading the way for sure, but the love is starting to spread around.

^ A very exciting time in the US for sure. I expect to have about 10 supertalls just on 57th alone by 2020 not to mention Hudson Yards, Midtown East, and now Downtown!
