After a quick search of this thread I can only find a passing reference to the Tail o' the Cock restaurant when it appeared in the background of an old postcard of Restaurant Row. Shelton McHenry opened the restaurant on La Cienega in 1939, and sold it in 1982. It closed in February, 1985. Tail o' the Cock head barman Johnny Durlesser is one of the rumored inventers of the Margarita cocktail, although there are many conflicting stories. There was another Tail o' the Cock at 12950 Ventura Boulevard. Here's a better picture of the one at La Cienega:

E.R. I don't think what you think may be a flagpole is a flagpole. Not sure what it is but it is outside of Annetta Court. I say outside because if you look at the arch and the lattice works on either side it appears there is a sidewalk and possibly street just beyond the arches. The gathering appears to be individuals moving furniture one in particular seems to be holding a mattress. I would suggest that scene may be across a street from Annetta Court. Is that a church in the background?

I think this is the gasometer in the background. Is that Chinese writing on the top in this 1948 aerial?

The gasometer disappeared sometime before the 1972 aerial. The location now appears to be a parking lot for Southern California Gas Company trucks.
The tall structure to the left of the gasometer and under the reddish spot in the color photo is the 11-story Hollywood Storage Co. building at 1025 N. Highland Avenue.
Okay, so the Glass House Restaurant (at Sixth & Main) provides this map, but they aren't on the map?

I haven't heard of many of these places, so this map is fascinating. Bublichki sounds interesting. Where was Romanoff's?
Did this Glass House have anything to do with the famous Glass House in Vinita, OK? Judging by this picture from James Lileks' website it does appear that nary a piece of styrofoam nor any paper cup was allowed to pollute these excellent culinary precincts when the place was opened in 1957, but more recently it has been a McDonalds, sad to say.

The picture at the top is Robert's Burbank. I remember going there as a child. My cousins, when they were children, called it the "driveway" as they could not remember "drive-in". The building was later sold, in the 60's, to the Van De Kamps company and they remodeled the round building into one of their windmill designs. I think it may have been another coffee shop after that. The property is now a sort of strip mall with a Chinese restaurant and a Subway sandwich shop among other things. As a lifelong Burbanker, I would have rather had the Robert's drive in.....
It would make my day is someone could dig up some information on this eccentric bungalow on the 400 block of E. Adams Blvd.

I picked up this vintage (50s-70s?) 11" pennant at a shop recently. It looks to me like it just has a view of random downtown city blocks on it.
But maybe you guys with more discerning and educated eyes can pick out some of the exact buildings or streets and let me know what/where is shown (if any)?

Does this aerial that Flyingwedge first provided suggest that the close-up photo above is the mid-point of the Annettta Court? Does it give any suggestions of parking places for autos around the buildings? (Like the smaller structures in the center area.)

My favorite part of Los Angeles--acres and acres of intact, undiscovered and unheralded Victorian neighborhoods. This is 424 East Adams, built in 1882, according to the assessor--seems rather early to me. There are several names associated with the lot--which may have also once carried the designation 426. It may have been built by Adolphus Fixen, although only one small item in the Times connects him to the address. Other names are Charles Bradshaw, a Mrs. Calvin, and Mrs. Robert Brown.. Thought we might have seen this house here before, but can't find anything.

So it's Adolphus Fixen is it. I'll have to try and find out some more information on him.
The house was built far earlier than I would have guess.
The upswing at each end of the roof resembles polynesian island architecture, while the extra sharp gables almost look science-fiction.
I can't even imagine what the interior looks like.
