Whew, I finally made it to the last page! First, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this amazing thread. I think I've learned more about the history of L.A. from here in the past month or so of reading, than I've ever learned in all my previous years.

As for my (first) contribution, I live a few blocks from the Mildred Pierce house at 1141 Jackson St. in Glendale that has been mentioned a few times. The whole area (Rossmoyne) is going through the historical designation process with the city of Glendale right now, as there are a lot of 1920s/1930s homes that have maintained their character and not been turned into mini-mansions.

Here is an ad from the Glendale News Press in 1925 announcing the sale of homes in Rossmoyne:

Mr. F.W. Pigg (the apparent builder of the home in the advertisement) might be pleased to know that his home is as pretty as ever at 1122 Rossmoyne Dr.

Hopefully I will contribute some more going forward, but I mostly wanted to say thanks for all the effort everyone has put into this. It's really amazing for an LA history buff like me!

Welcome to the thread Ragner!

It's very heartening to see that 1122 Rossmoyne Drive has survived after all these years.
I look forward to more of your posts. -ethereal_reality

Look at the air quality in 1954. Some things have improved since then.

some more interesting items uncovered over at the lapl california index

a very nice color advertisement from 1941 of the mayflower hotel, (shown above in my current now then's)

GW had posted a little while ago about the nikabob cafe. here's a magazine advertisement from 1941

found a great newspaper image, showing a photo of the paris inn on market street from 1941

and speaking of the paris inn, there's this very colorful magazine cover for tips to southern California February 1941

and if the burning question of what was playing in los angeles movie theaters the week of february 8th to the 15th, 1940 was keepin' ya up at night......well here ya go................(now go get some sleep)

and just in case you can't get some sleep, you can always party the 1940 night away at these establishments

they even list our ol' roundup, the bamba club, (on north spring street despite published rumors of n. main)

The Bonaventure Hotel under construction in 1977.

"Above Los Angeles"

I would love to see how these so called 'plazas' have evolved over the years.
The 'plaza' on the left appears to be the roof of a parking garage.
I wonder if a pedestrian bridge was eventually built to connect it to the Bonaventure Hotel.

This is a good example of the banality that replaced downtown Los Angeles' vibrant street life.

below: Here is a close up of the Paris Inn sign that gsjansen mentioned in the above post.

I believe this is a detail of a slide I found on ebay.

The date I have for this photo is 1910 (which seems quite early).

The Sun Building at Hill and 7th Street.
I wouldn't want to be standing at the base of this building during a trembler.
My luck one of those massive urn-ornaments on the roof would come crashing down on my head.

It's always exciting to find a negative on ebay.
The possiblity that no one has seen this neg. since it was taken back in the day.

This negative was simply labeled Los Angeles. You can almost make out the word Westminster above the door.

so last night, i sit back with mrs. gsjansen to watch the john huston noir classic, the asphalt jungle. a movie she had never seen, and it's been years since i last watched it.

needless to say, watching any noir flick directed by the master of the genre, mr. huston, starring sterling hayden, louis calhern, james whitmore, and young fetching marilyn monroe is a great way to spend an evening!

anyway, this picture is supposed to take place in Cincinnati, and most of the location filming appears to have been done in this ohio town.

However, during the opening scene, just after the credits, there is this scene

i then proceeded to drive the missus up the wall, as i rewind, replay, rewind, replay, rewind..............................(you get the point)

dayum! i yell, (and i did), it's 1st street looking east from between olive and grand! there's the streeter apartments, with the cecil across the street, and there's no mistaking that bulk off in the distance at 1st and spring. that's the times building i exclaim!..................................(mrs. gsjansen says.........."can we get back to watching the movie now?").

obviously, i pay very close attention to all on location shots throughout the rest of the film, and no, this one image that i posted above, is the sole bunker hill image, (there is an image of some gasometers, but i have no idea of knowing if they are Angeleno, or Cincinnatian gas tanks).

i guess they needed a last minute pickup shot during editing, and huston said, let's get a 2nd crew up there on bunker hill and get the shot we need!

you can view the opening scene here at turner classic movies

this is the best that i can do with bing maps

as you can see, there is most certainly a bridge connecting the bonaventure. it's also quite a bit more crowded, (it almost makes the image you posted rather pastoral).

here's a somewhat similar view from 1967, (the castle and the salt box are still intact).

Thanks gsjansen. That bing photo is almost the exact same angle.

I see the Calder sculpture is still there.
