^ sweet pic... love the terraced built form down to the water. From a distance looks a bit like a modern Amalfi (excepting the highrises ;-).

Awesome, pic, thanks for posting!

It’s crazy to think that even White Rock now has a skyline...

While Toronto has the best individual suburban skyscrapers in Canada, overall I find that Vancouver has the best suburban skylines in Canada. The settings and form and general urbanism is better IMO.

Especially when relative population size is accounted for.

Metro Van now has:

North Vancouver
West Vancouver
Joyce
Metrotown
Brentwood
Lougheed
Edmonds
Como Lake
Coquitlam
Ioco
New West downtown
New West uptown
Richmond
Marine
White Rock
Surrey
Oakridge is soon to be a major skyline.
Plus many other smaller pockets

It is also getting harder now to separate some of these skylines as some are starting to grow into each other.

I don’t count the south shore (Broadway area) as a suburban skyline as that is too close to downtown IMO.

Yeah it does look like a place along the Mediterranean with that built form and actual different colours.

Barrhaven, the southern suburban area of Ottawa. Next in line for an O-Train extension (estimated 2030).

I love that midrise in that last picture of Barrhaven with the white on the first few floors. Can I get a few copy + pastes of that in metro Vancouver ?

It helps that the street grid was laid out and development started occurring in the late pre-war/early post-war era, which has given it a more workable format to build from (ie. fine grained, sidewalk-fronting high street retail).

The other successful suburban downtowns like Oakville and Burlington are similar. The suburban-downtown-from-scratch model of Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham is much harder to work with. The end results may end up successful as well, but in the interim they don't lend themselves as well to the realities of incremental development.

North York City Centre isn't pure post-war, is it? Probably more comparable to Etobicoke City Centre/Islington Village or Port Credit than to Scarborough City Centre or Mississauga City Centre.

Of all these, I give the fake downtown Markham the best shot, despite being the one that has the worst transit connections, because the typical Chinese or East Asian lifestyle, where you do most of your entertaining outside of your home, and you want to eat food until late at night and hop between restaurants that cater to different specialties, is very amenable to supporting fine-grained urbanism.

That’s at least half the reason why North York Centre isn’t just serviceably urban but actually interesting.

That clocktower is incredibly menacing. Sitting there all high and mighty and extremely ugly and hulking. Reminds me of the huge pickup trucks that are being pushed by Ford/GMC/Chevey/Ram. Especially the Chevy Silverado. My god that is one fucking ugly vehicle.
