I can't wait to see this thing in person, it looks like an absolute beast. Tall *and* massive

^ It is massive. Some may say "too" massive from certain angles. It would probably be better if that massive facade was broken up with more design, but it's fine as is.

yeah kind of a dud at the end of the day--certainly massive but lacking personality until it gets all fussy at the top, like it's making up for lost time.

the cantilevered observation deck is pretty sweet, though. probably cost $35 to get up there...

It is a bit awkward looking I suppose, but I like it. Especially the outdoor deck.

This building is utterly massive though. Not just in height but in girth it's just huge

30 Hudson gradually got bulkier, as it gained in height, then decreased in height. At one time it was above 1,300 ft. Earlier renderings look awkward now...

I think we have improved, significantly, especially considering what was to become before...

Not to state the obvious, but it's big and bulky like that because that's what the sort of companies looking to move into a building like this want. An office building is a vastly more utilitarian structure than a supertall residential tower.

Yes, it became bulkier on the lower floors because that's what the future occupants (Time Warner) wanted. Also the tower was increased in size. I always suspected that Related didn't transfer any of the development rights from the railyard towards 55 like Extell had planned to do in order to utilize them here. Extell planned a larger tower at the 55 site, and like all of the developments in the rezoned district, full development potential is reached by transferring development rights from the railyards. The only tower so far that's not as large as it could be is 55.

Still, 50 Hudson and the Spiral are both towers of the same size as 30, but obviously use larger floorplates throughout.

My only complaint is that I wish it was taller.

It should have been at least 150 ft. taller. Now it dominates, but not long-term.

Yeah, it may eventually not even be the tallest tower on the west side, but time will tell.

I like the wide angle realism as well as the "messed with the color balance" shots. Cool juxtaposition.

@NYGuy;

Isn't there somehow unofficially in place a generally roundabout understanding that 30H will remain the dominant structure height-wise on the greater Hudson/Eastern Yards itself?

For the Eastern Yards, yeah, but that's like 10% of Hudson Yards.

Obviously Related cannot dictate building envelopes to other developers, and they haven't revealed specifics of the Western Yards. The vast majority of HY is unknown at this point.

That's the way the railyard development was planned, for the tallest towers to stand on the eastern half, allowing the "shorter" towers to fall closer to the river. I believe 30 will be Related's tallest tower. But we don't know how everything else will eventually shape up around it. Already, 360 10th Ave appears to be a tower of equal height or greater. And we were talking about the other state owned land south of Javits in the phase 2 threat. Who knows what will go there.

But imagine a tower taller than 30 rising behind 55 Hudson. It would be similar to the WTC "spiral" effect.
