I guess the battle lines are now drawn. I would go downtown to a department store before ever setting foot in WEM. Tourists with the new ICE district could be enticed to shop Downtown also.

Obviously an individual and group that does not care about the city as a whole - only their own private kingdom within it.

Sharpen your pencils time for Manulife or others... WEM is a huge carrot and I cannot fault them for wanting to snag Holt, mind you, my guess is that they want one of 2 US department stores before Holt, with holt being their runner up.

And????? Who wouldn't do the same thing if it was their money on the line. All of you who don't like it, pool your money together and open your own store.

There was an earlier rumor about leases at Manulife not being renewed in favor of a Holt expansion.

We all know WEM has been a blessing and a curse for this city.

We have all supported WEM for many years. Why not be good Corporate citizens and support the city.

Instead of drawing clients away from downtown why doesn't Triple 5 come downtown and invest there?

Because it's not their business model? I want Holt to stay DT as much as anyone (and don't want them going to WEM), but you can't fault the mall for trying to lure Holt.

Triple 5 did invest in downtown at one point, they built Eaton Centre which became City Centre Mall west.

I don't fault them for trying to lure business to WEM, but comments like "I think the days are numbered for luxury stores downtown" shows a glaringly poor attitude toward the city in which they operate, and basically pisses all over the hard work of people who have been trying to make downtown a destination again.

No, we have not all supported WEM, and you should know better about 555's Eaton Centre debacle which has practically put a shotgun blast in downtown retailing's heart.

If someone came to your party, took a huge toxic steaming dump in your living room (i.e. Eaton Centre) and stole your wallet (i.e. tax concessions), why would you ever want to invite them back?

OK, perhaps a bit hyperbolic but the day Edmonton ever welcomes 555 back downtown would be the proverbial cold day in heck.

Wouldn't the KPMG space at Commerce be a good location for Holt? Is it large enough?

555: prime example of corporate rent seeking behavior. They eat the pie rather than enlarge it.

And Diamonds.

I have been informed anytime I buy a new bike I must purchase a diamond of equal or great value.

So, some musing of mine, for which I'd value some local clarity.

Is City Centre West honestly viable? I was in Edmonton over Christmas and was surprised at the number of new vacancies (e.g. that large men's clothing store, for one) and the proliferation of medical and quasi-health tenants, which are usually a sure fire sign that a mall is out of ideas, and/or no longer a strongly viable retail operation.

Anyhow, I sometimes wish downtown Edmonton had half the enclosed retail it currently has, and instead have one fully functional downtown mall as opposed to two projects (owned by the same party) with too much rentable area, struggling to make a go of things.
