When I saw this photo, I didn't dare to post saying this photo is fake as it seemed so obvious ! A lot of folks seem to have been pasted. It is obvious by lightnings that doesn't match the rest, by heads which are too big or too small, etc.
I suggest a survey by the noirishers, with numbers on the heads like we did lately for that photo with movie stars on an outside set.

I think this is Julius Shulman's last Coffee Dan's photoset, and I'm going to need some help with its location. Sadly, there's only a single image in "Job 2552: Roland Russell, Coffee Dan's (Azusa, Calif.), 1958".

All I've got to go on is Azusa, and so far I've only found clues to the exact address. This advert from the December 19, 1957 edition of the Covina Argus uses Coffee Dan's as a landmark, which would suggest a location on E Alosta. I don't know if E Alosta got renumbered at some point, but 18528 seems too large for an address in Azusa. Regarding the advert, I'm not sure how 13- and 14-year-olds count as "subteens". I assume that the store was named after the famous Petticoat Lane Market in London.

On the Vintage Los Angeles Facebook page, there's a copy of Julius Shulman's picture of Coffee Dan's on Wilshire (seen here a couple of days ago). In the comments underneath, I found these two references to Coffee Dan's in Azusa:

Jayson Wall I remember going to Coffee Dan's in Azusa back in the early 70's with my parents---and across the street was a Sambos!

Norma Meshew We went to Coffee Dan's in Azusa and we had our first Chef Salad there in 1959. It was on the corner of Citrus and Foothill/Route 66.

The December 15, 1977 edition of Progress Bulletin also places a branch of Sambo's at Citrus and Alosta.

My only problem with this location is that I can't make out any of the buildings from the Shulman picture in the views at Historic Aerials. The one below is from 1964 (the first after the 1958 date of the Shulman picture). The proximity of the mountains in the Shulman picture would suggest that, if this is the correct location, we'd be looking at the north side of E Alosta Avenue. To me, the mountains look much closer in the Shulman picture compared to when I use GSV, but we've seem optical illusions like this many times before.

I found this in the LA Times, St. Patrick’s Day, 1957 confirming that location. It also says it was the 11th in the chain and notes architect Roland Logan Russell’s design emphasized the California ranch-style architecture.

Yes, indeed. Forty-nine years ago, these newly-weds spent time at Coffee Dan's at Alosta and Citrus. In the photo, the old building across Alosta was Azusa College and our love nest was down Alosta a couple of blocks at 1160.

That's an interesting observation AlvaroLegido.

In my initial post, I also mentioned that some of the heads seemed to be out of proportion.

Does anyone know; was it common back then to add people into a 'group' photograph that might have missed a special occasion?

High winds today brought down at least part of one of the KFWB towers on the old Warners Hollywood Theater (G Albert Lansburgh, 1928), although I haven't seen any damage photos. Hollywood Blvd was closed between Wilcox and Cahuenga.

Suspect this is a stop on the El Monte Busway that parallels The San Bernardino Freeway (I 10) east of Los Angeles.

Im pretty sure thats the 10 freeway right at Cal State LA ..still in operation.Not sure of which street it is but i know for sure its before the 5 interchange

unihikid, you and Tourmaline are both correct. IIRC, the CSULA Station was rebuilt to accommodate the Metrolink stop when they began service to San Bernardino ca. 1993.

Just a quick note here.

Classic Arts Showcase, that runs on KCET in LA, has run a little vid of buildings and other things in the Hollywood area, shot in 1927. This is a short film that lasts a few mins. Among the buildings are the Tam O'Shanter Inn, The Brown Derby, The billboard along Wilshire that had an actual car inside the picture frame, that has been discussed here in the past. Also, The City Jail Cafe that was talked about a few years ago. There was a man that was dressed as a prisoner out front. Ends with a shot of the Chinese Theatre that had just opened that year.

I have only seen it twice in the last 6 months or so. I would imagine they run on a loop, with other films/vids so, you would have to keep an eye out for this.

Being shot in '27, there is no voiceover, but it does have cut ins to explain what you are seeing. Soundtrack is of some nice ragtime tunes.
