Charlotte = 871' (pretty good comparison as the Charlotte metro is slightly larger than Austin's)

That building looks like it was influenced by the Empire State Building only with a shorter modern rendition. Its what I think the Frost tower would be closer to in height if it was built today, sans the awful bulky base and podium. What Austin needs are more buildings like Battle House, no podium, point or pencil towers from the ground up. It makes them seem taller than they are, definitely more elegant.
I accept 44 East will sit atop a bulky podium being all residential, but it would look amazing if it remained the same height without it, and as I said, it would look taller and more elegant. That's why 90 Rainey appeals to me more.

The event happened and was a big success. Raised over $100k for the Trail Foundation. Glad you weren't in charge of their PR

Where did this come from? It’s a total non sequitur.

What ever happened to personal accountability and personal choices?

Sign a waiver and accept the risk yourself, or don't.

The frivolous lawsuit climate we have in this country is such a gigantic waste of money all around.

Key tower is 947' at it's tallest point. Only 57 stories. But the metro is a good size comparison to Austin.

This seems like an oversight on somebody's part. But this project went back to the Planning Commission last night to seek a variance on the glass they are using. Apparently the glass they were planning on using is more reflective than zoning allows, and they want a variance. I don't know what the PC vote was.

What does that even mean? We have rules on glass reflectiveness? Is that normal?

Not an oversight. This issue first came up for 70 Rainey and a handful of other towers have missed it (including Four Seasons residential). PC initiated a code change to update this and 44 East Avenue team has been watching that hoping it would happen before they had to run their own case. Sadly, it's going slow at the city...hence last night's item. Passed on consent.

If I remember correctly--and I probably don't--with 3rd and Shoal there was some rule related to glass reflectiveness for buildings next to the water. They chose the green color because of a need to hit Facebook's energy efficiency requirements while also meeting the city's reflectiveness requirements.

I was thinking it had to do with the proximity to I-35. You don't want the sun reflecting into driver's eyes.

Community Impact goes into a little more detail about the reflectivity issue.

Quote:
The Austin Planning Commission on Jan. 14 said it was OK for the 570-foot tower to have a mirrored glass facade with 30% reflectivity—greater than the 20% limit mandated for downtown waterfront properties in the city’s building code. The variance, which was recommended by city staff, came on the condition that the developer, Intracorp, work with the city to ensure the building design is “bird friendly”—or designed in way that works to deter birds from crashing into the building and dying.
