I remember working at the Casino Regina when that Native band from Florida tried building that stadium here. Rumor going around casino was that the band wanted the casino as well. Of course cash talks and b.s. walks

That’s weird (to quote the eggs commercial)
Is there not room to orient the field the other way ?

Yup, I remember that too.... and with the Casino giving the government generally $30+ million a year, it would have definitely been a major shift here. That and with CP deciding to sell less land than originally planned; that stadium woudn't fit in the current railyard development area.

There's definitely room but the main grandstand would be too short for the length of the field (64m grandstand on a 105m long pitch), whereas it's the perfect width for the field (64m grandstand on a 68m wide pitch). Aesthetically just looks better, I guess.

FIFA regulation is stadiums orient North/South to prevent advantage from one team facing the sun. Stupid but it is what it is

Good point, that must be a thing in all rectangular-field sports now? I know IG Field, Mosaic and even Tim Hortons Field are all built on pretty well a straight N-S plane. THF was even rotated 90 degrees from the old Ivor Wynne configuration, presumably for that reason?

I'm assuming BMO is also built N-S... it sure looks like it. Is Saputo as well?

The orientation of these stadiums have very little to do with soccer standards for the most part. That is just a by product of how the stadiums were designed and built for their intended purposes. Other than Saputo and BMO none of the stadiums were designed specifically to cater to soccer, N/S just works for most field sports....

Apparently there was quite a cerfuffle at council today about the new arena. All in all the indications are that it will be going ahead as planned, but is likely to come in significantly over budget... which is crazy since it's already the third most expensive NHL arena ever proposed. 0_o

Welcome to the journey and this won't be the last of that kind of discussion...

Bleh. But we're so far along in the process now! Renders will be released by the end of the month and construction in 5 months. Please just let it happen. After the Green Line disaster, we need a win.

What got cut? It's hard to believe anything was value engineered out of that building. It's the most sumptuous hockey venue I've been in next to Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Various higher quality/level finishes
Partial scope
Additional retail portion
etc.
etc.

I'm having trouble finding anything official on what Chad is speaking to re: Calgary council, arena costs, etc.

OK, so a bit of trimming around the edges but nothing major really. The finishes are all still pretty nice.

That figure likely included removing the community rink from the one pot of dollars and getting other funding for it versus having it included in the original plan.

Council is leaking like a sieve, but no one has talked even on a not for attribution basis yet. Hopefully we get something in the next 48 hours.

Starlight era begins at Langford stadium

"A stadium by any other name is a common thing. Especially when it comes to corporate sponsorships, which switch often as a part of the economics of sport, such as the recent change in Seattle from CenturyLink to Lumen Field.

So Westhills Stadium officially becomes Starlight Stadium this week.

...

Toronto-based Starlight Investments will pay more than $500,000 for the naming rights over five years. Young says it is the largest corporate sponsorship in Langford history. It is expected Langford will get about 15 per cent of the naming-rights proceeds with the Canadian Premier League pro soccer club Pacific FC, which initiated the deal, to get the lion’s share.

...

Starlight Stadium is home to PFC, the Tokyo Olympics-bound Canadian men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams and the Westshore Rebels of the B.C. Football Conference. It has also been looked at as a medium-sized venue for the Canadian men’s soccer team in World Cup qualifying games in the years ahead, against smaller CONCACAF nations, that don’t require stadiums the size of B.C. Place or BMO Field in Toronto.

...

Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, home to the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League, has retained that dual corporate and Second World War-memorial name since opening in 2005 as the replacement for the old Memorial Arena. The original deal for the naming rights was for $1.25 million over 10 years.

That was extended in 2014 for another 10 years, running through 2024 for a reported $900,000. Under the old arrangement, the City of Victoria received $70,000 over 10 years. Under the current contract, the city gets $90,000 over 10 years."
