Yeah, that too. Or could just be some meaningless abstract design.

This quickly creates a terribly uneven road surface that will soon begin to fail.

Also beyond "potholes" - what happened on my block was Streets came in and paved, re-striped, re-painted all of the crosswalks and bikelanes beautifully. Then, 2 weeks later - the ADA boys showed up and re-cut all of the curbs and drains to install the ADA pads. The Result? All of the crosswalks were patched over with new asphalt and at every intersection the bikelanes were covered up. Just looks sloppy and patchy. I asked the contractor if they'd touch up the janky crosswalks/bikelane lines. "Absolutely," he said. lol

that is how ADA curb ramps are always done- they arent even done by the same types of crews, its a separate part of the project and if it is done properly there is no detrimental impact on the asphalt area near the curb ramp. Again, major replacement projects are coordinated with the City and PennDOT to avoid paving a street before a pipe replacement is scheduled. But there is little that can be done to avoid repairs or new construction related connections that are needed in the months or years after a repave job. A utility patch should not lead to a pothole if sealed properly.

It's like when streets are repaved and restriped someone say hey did x block just get repaved and looks good? Ok good send out the boys to dig up the corners and fix it we could have did it before they came but its better after.

No coordination at all in this city.

It's like putting a skyscraper up first and getting to the 50th floor and then going back down into the basement and connecting the water pipes and sewage lines.
This the the contractor's means and methods and to get the slope properly you need a final elevation of the street to be in place. It is done that way for a reason and if you look around you will see properly done curb ramps all over where there is a nearly seamless transition from the area patched near the ramp and the road surface. BEfore you pave a street you have to mill the entire top level surface or wearing course, you could never install a curb ramp in its entirety BEFORE you mill the road surface, you would end up removing all asphalt right up to the curb line and then have to redo that section to ensure proper slope and transition between the edge of the concrete and new pavement.

Should and what reality shows are often different.
One practice here in Philly (elsewhere?) is the party making the opening is not responsible for returning the street to a finished state. (except PGW) They backfill the hole, throw a cold patch on it, and that's all folks. The City counts on vehicles driving over the patch to provide further compacting of the soil in the hole. Then after X amount of time the City comes along, digs out a foot or so, then first pours a new concrete patch, then a couple days later does the final asphalt. I think a big part of the problem is the new concrete is not tied into the old concrete, so it floats. As traffic continues to compress the hole, if it wasn't packed correctly to begin with, the whole patch begins to sink, and in a week or so, another you have a problem.

does anyone know what is slated for the lot (4414 ridge) north of the new townhouses that front Ridge and Kelly Drive? Drove past there and equipment is on site clearing the lot and digging up rocks. I don't see any new permits for that lot. Building Permit was just issued for a 5 story building at the long vacant lot at Kelly drive and calumet. Maybe something will happen this time, its been like 10 years since a project was first scheduled for this site.

edit: nevermind this is 4442 ridge ave. Looks like another apt building.

This is perhaps the largest trough of hot nonsense you've ever tried to serve this group.

Thank you for chiming in allovertown. Again something wasnt sounding right.

Cardeza why is it every time we have these convos you have an explanation for the backwards ass stuff Philly does.

It can be done before. Last time I checked they can grade freshly poured asphalt to fit curbs & etc.

Cmon.

Architect of Race Street Pier chosen as lead planner for next phase of Navy Yard development

Quote:
Philadelphia-based landscape architect James Corner, whose past projects have included the redevelopment of Race Street Pier on Old City’s Delaware River waterfront, has been selected to lead the next phase of planning at the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia.

Corner’s firm, James Corner Field Operations, will bring “a fresh, creative, and inclusive approach that will drive an ambitious plan for new development,” said Kate McNamara, senior vice president with the Navy Yard’s quasi-governmental overseer, the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp., in a release announcing the selection Wednesday.

Corner has already made a mark on the former military base as designer of the landscaped Central Green recreational area at the core of the Navy Yard’s existing Corporate Center development.

As the leader of the master-planning-update process for the property, Corner will lead a team of 13 specialist firms, more than half of them minority- and women-owned businesses such as civil-engineering company David Mason & Associates.

The team also includes architecture firm Digsau, which has designed several buildings at the Navy Yard and in central Philadelphia, as well as in other cities.

This has been well under construction for over a year. The rowhomes on McClellan are nearly finished with foundation work underway on the Moore street side. Not sure what kind of update this is...
