We all said it was inevitable way back when they presented the design. And now it's closed while they work on a solution. Which will probably inevitably be higher railings. I still am a little mind-boggled that they just didn't built it with higher railings on the exterior in the first place.

Well as long as it looks good, those pesky smaller things such as....suicide prevention measures, fall by the way side in a structure like this.

Tragic? Yes. Sad? Yes.

But let's not fool ourselves. It is no more tragic here than it is when it happens everywhere else in the city. It's far too often that something like this happens in the city, but if it happens in the polished west side? Shock and awe that this could possibly happen. Only if you live in a bubble of course.

Mom Jumps off N.Y.C. Building with 5-Year-Old Daughter, Killing Them Both in Murder-Suicide
Sources say the tragic incident was captured by surveillance cameras

By Chris Harris
January 12, 2021

Quote:
The murder-suicide happened at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Sources tell PEOPLE Patchin brought her young daughter to Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, where the two visited with one of Patchin's friends.

Police sources say Patchin can be seen in surveillance footage on the roof of a building on West 53rd Street. In the video, she is seen climbing over a safety gate, the sources confirm. She then picks up her daughter, Olivia, and jumps 12 stories to the ground.

But they keep putting up these damned buildings all over the city. They were warned that something like this could happen.

NYPD: Man, 38, dies in jump from Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

A 38-year-old man died after jumping off the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Friday, according to an NYPD spokesman.

Emergency personnel received multiple 911 calls around 2 p.m. for a report of a jumper on the Staten Island-bound side of the bridge.

Multiple witnesses stated that they saw the man jump from the bridge.

It goes on and on and on, far too often, far too tragic. But let's not fetishize it when it happens at the Hudson Yards. It happens far too often everywhere. And sadly, that will continue. Get equally outraged when it happens everywhere.

A person fatally jumped from a luxury apartment building on the Upper East Side early Friday, authorities said.

The victim plunged from the 14-story prewar building on Park Avenue near East 65th Street just after 5 a.m., cops said.

This goes on far too often.

Cuomo adds housing to $51B Midtown West project
Development could include 1,400 affordable units

January 14
By Kathryn Brenzel

Quote:
The state’s massive development plans for the area surrounding Penn Station now includes affordable housing.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that the 20 million square feet of development planned for the neighborhood would not only include retail and commercial space, but also housing — a significant chunk of it affordable.

Officials had previously drafted a proposal to develop 10 buildings with more than 1,000 hotel rooms and 14 million square feet of office space, according to a scope of work issued in December.

But during a briefing to elaborate on his myriad State of the State proposals, Cuomo unveiled more extensive plans, including up to 1,400 affordable units. The governor said the state would make “14 building sites available” for the development and that affordable homes would be the priority.

The four additional buildings are planned for two state-owned sites next to and across the street from the Javits Center, according to state officials.

Empire State Development, the state’s development arm, initially envisioned only commercial space for the eight sites in the immediate vicinity of Penn Station. But in its final plan, the agency opened the door to three of those sites having residential space. To allow for the development of these and the other five sites, the state is seeking to override city zoning regulations to construct larger buildings.

The new buildings around Penn would generate revenue to help pay for the station’s redevelopment. The state plans to add another eight tracks by acquiring a block south of Penn, which contains 51 separate properties.

It seems these are the sites (in red) the state will use for affordable housing...

A little more on the overall scope of west side development….

Time to Have Your Say On the Future of Penn Station and “Manhattan Midtown West”

by Phil O'Brien

Quote:
In January, Governor Andrew Cuomo heralded a $51bn reimagining of Manhattan Midtown West that will “spread East to Broadway and West to the Hudson” — by March, that plan was being opposed by local politicians as “a real estate development plan, not a transportation plan.” Next week, residents will have their chance to get a say in the future of the area at a Virtual Town Hall.

Manhattan Community Board 4 (MCB4) Chair Lowell Kern encouraged locals to get involved, saying: “The Governor’s proposal has the potential to displace residents and business in the district, while also the potential to enhance the neighborhood for generations to come. We believe it is important the community learn more details of this plan now.”
Quote:
Cuomo announced the plan in his State of the State address at the start of the year. He said the project — which includes the redevelopment of the Javits Center, Port Authority Bus Terminal, Penn Station, and extensions of the High Line to the new Moynihan Train Hall and Pier 76 — would create almost 200,000 jobs.

The ambitious multi-billion dollar plan takes in 140 acres of Manhattan real estate and will include transit hubs and “new residential commercial and public works projects that will combine to form a new vibrant, exciting district,” he said. Cuomo’s first step is to deal with New York’s decaying transit hubs and push again for the delayed Gateway Project to deliver new train tunnels between Manhattan and New Jersey.
Quote:
The Governor has since delivered the new development at the Javits Center, which has increased capacity by 50%.

He’s also created a 5-acre open space at Pier 76, replacing the NYPD Tow Pound. “Pier 76 is probably the most under-utilized piece of real estate in New York City. After decades of apathy, the pier will become a magnificent public space that will delight visitors and tourists and welcome all of Manhattan,” he commented in January.

Cuomo’s overall plan for the west side involves “another New York city eyesore, the Port Authority Bus Complex.” At the end of June, Town Halls were held by Port Authority to outline their proposals for the terminal to Hell’s Kitchen residents.
Quote:
He plans to thread all this together by extensions of the High Line to “make this a walkable, enjoyable part of Manhattan,” he said. Phase one will connect the High Line to the new Moynihan Train Hall by extending “eastward from 10th Avenue and 30th street through the Brookfield properties, creating a 1,200 foot path.” The state is studying a proposed phase two, in which the High Line will push northward and connect Pier 76 with a pedestrian bridge across the West Side Highway.
Quote:
Part of the $51bn funding will come from making 14 building sites available that will yield 20 million square feet of retail, commercial and residential development. Cuomo emphasized that the “priority will be to use these sites for affordable housing, creating up to 1,400 much-needed units.

“In total, these West Side projects represent $51bn in investment and 196,000 jobs. Even more. They will show New Yorkers and the world that a new New York city is in reach and that the future is bright,” he added during his State of the State speech.
Quote:
Some of the proposed towers are so-called “supertalls” of up to 1,300 feet that would block views of the Empire State Building and cast large shadows over much of midtown.

“The ‘Complex’ would cause myriad adverse impacts: from sidewalk overcrowding, shadows, and the demolition of entire city blocks, to the obstruction of views of the Empire State Building. The state treats these issues as if they are a ripple in the midst of a tsunami of development. They are fully aware of all the impacts, yet they propose no mitigation,” said Kern and Law-Gisiko.

LeFrancois warned at the MCB4 Executive Committee in March that If the plan moves forward: “It will only make the area more dangerous, crowded, and we could add the Empire Station Complex plan to the list of planning failures for the city and the state.”

Empire State Development plans to present and discuss the proposed Empire Station Complex project at the Town Hall on Thursday, July 15 at 6pm via Zoom.

NYC Reaping Hudson Yards Dividends After Luxury Building Boom

By Martin Z Braun
October 18, 2021

Quote:
Hudson Yards, a 45-square block district of office towers, luxury apartments and upscale shops on Manhattan’s far West Side, is paying down its tab with New York City’s taxpayers.

The Hudson Yards Infrastructure Corp., created by the city to finance the redevelopment, has transferred about $663 million in surplus property tax and other revenue to the city since 2017, 80% of which was in the last three years, according to an offering document for a bond sale this week.
Quote:
The distribution is more than the $360 million the city spent to subsidize the interest payments on $2.7 billion of debt sold by the infrastructure corporation to finance the extension of the No. 7 subway line and a boulevard-lined park. It’s also more than enough to cover $230 million in cost overruns and future planned spending for the new neighborhood.

The city estimates existing and future development in Hudson Yards will generate $27.1 billion from the current fiscal year through 2047, six times more than debt service for the corporation’s bonds.

“Hudson Yards is a financial win for the city of New York,” said Mitch Schwartz, a spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio in an email.
Quote:
Hudson Yards got off to a slow start because of the Great Recession, requiring the city to step in and cover some of the bond payments until building progressed. But in the last decade developers have built or renovated seven offices buildings with three more towers under construction. Ernst & Young LLP, KKR & Co and Tapestry Inc. have already moved into the neighborhood, while BlackRock Inc., Pfizer Inc., and Facebook Inc. have leased space in office towers under construction.

In addition, almost 10,000 rental and condominium units and 8,500 hotel rooms have been built, with more than 25 million square feet of a planned 53 million square feet of construction completed. The district encompasses Related Cos.’ branded Hudson Yards project as well as Brookfield Properties’ Manhattan West.
Quote:
Asking office rents in Hudson Yards average $118.54 per square foot, the highest in New York City, according to Cushman & Wakefield, a commercial real estate services firm that prepared a development and revenue report for this week’s bond sale. Taxable assessed values of four completed towers in Hudson Yards fell less than 1% this year, compared with almost 12% for commercial real estate overall. Occupancy rates in the completed office buildings range from 72.2% to 100%.

To be sure, the pandemic did claim Neiman Marcus, the anchor of Hudson Yards’ tony mall, which filed for bankruptcy in May 2020. Still, the mall makes up about 3% of the overall development. The residential market is still recovering and hotels are struggling.

However, the district’s amenities, eco-friendly buildings with open floor plans, and proximity to the new Moynihan Train Hall and Pennsylvania Station, which is under renovation, have proved attractive to workers and companies, said Nora Wittstruck, an S&P analyst.

“There’s a lot of synergy around” Hudson Yards, said Wittstruck.

Progress continues to be made on High Line X Moynihan Connector

By Isabella Roman
Posted on July 27, 2022

You might be able to avoid the traffic to Penn Station with this new mode of transportation. The High Line X Moynihan Connector will link the High Line’s Spur to the public plaza at Manhattan West, the route will lead all the way to Moynihan Train Hall on 9th ave.

The connector broke in February of this year but with construction starting now it will hopefully be reopened for use in the spring of 2023.

The design for the connector was originally made in collaboration with James Corner Field Operations, who was a part of the High Line’s original design team, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

A gaudy mall whose anchor tenant immediately shuttered, situated across from an enormous and deadly eyesore, is now being subdivided by one of America's least trusted banks.
