^ Fun fact, Edmonton has a duplicate of Calgary's First Baptist. The congregation of Oliver's Robertson Presbyterian (now Robertson-Wesley United) wasn't able to finance their own design, so instead bought First Baptist's from its Calgarian architect, D.S. McIllroy. Some differences exist between the two — notable substituting Sandstone with Tyndall and the addition of the post-war Memorial Hall in Edmonton's case — but I think you'd be hard pressed to find two more similar churches in Alberta.

That's quite a nice church in Calgary. I've never been familiar with western Canada churches (Manitoba to BC with the exception of St-Boniface in Winnipeg).

In eastern Canada, churches dominated our skylines until the 60s office boom but still possess a place of honour in our cities urban form and continue to be well known landmarks.

Knox United would fit quite handsomely in the Golden Square Mile.

These are some photo of Churches and Cathedrals I've photographed in Victoria over the years. These are all photos I've taken...I've uploaded a couple of multiple photos. Victoria has some really beautiful churches for the size of city it is.

^ That is a great post highlighting a really impressive collection in Victoria. Thanks! I'm actually a little surprised at the size of some of those given Victoria's size when they were built.

Some gorgeous churches posted. And that VIC set is amazing. Love the white one with a splash of colour. I see so many white houses or churches or whatever and wish they had that extra little colour to warm it up. Perfect example. And that red and orange one is quite unique. Would think combining those two colours would produce something ugly. But not the case.

Thanks for all your great comments on my Victoria Church photos. There's one more I haven't photographed yet but will soon. These other two photos are old Catholic buildings.

This is St. Anne's Academy

Right across from St. Anne's is St. Joseph's. It was the only old Catholic building left all the others got torn down. I wish they could have kept them because they were all beautiful old buildings. I also wish I had taken photos of them before they were demolished. St. Joseph's is now appartments.

I'm sure this has been posted before. It's (I believe?) the largest Cathedral still in tact in the prairies...

The little town of Gravelbourg SK is home to the impressive Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral (shared diocese with Regina). Gravelbourg is a French Canadian town on the Saskatchewan prairie and is the unofficial capital of the Fransaskois. The Cathedral stands proudly at the south end of Main Street, opposite the old train station and row of grain elevators. It was built before electricity came to Gravelbourg, but the forward thinking architects and planners wired the building anyway so that when the electricity did arrive they wouldn't have to tear up the building's innards. The (co-)Cathedral also features impressive interior artwork painted by a local clergyman who used local townsfolk as models for various religious figures. The Cathedral is built from the distinctive Claybank Brick, which is used throughout Saskatchewan, and was even what NASA used to construct the launchpad for the Apollo 11 mission.

Gravelbourg, as co-seat of the diocese, also has a few other impressive ecclesiastical structures, including the Gravelbourg Convent. No longer used as a convent, the building housed the local public library and elementary school for many years, but now sits largely empty since a new school building was constructed last decade. The beautiful building with especially impressive interior spaces now faces an uncertain future, despite a concerted community effort to find a new use for it.

Neat that they are posted back to back. I got married at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Regina and my grandparents got married at the Gravelbourg Cathedral.

Église Sainte-Marie, Church Point, Nova Scotia. At 56m tall apparently one of the tallest wooden structures in North America. It was built between 1903 - 1905.

A neat little oddity near my house. I'm not sure what the story is here but... it certainly is orange.

Saint-Georges-de-Beauce (ouest)

I have a personal "connection" with this church, since my maternal family is from there. Over the years these walls have witnessed sad and happy events in the family, including my parents' wedding. (Sad or happy event, I'll let you guess!)

However, I invite you to watch this short video which is really worth it. This church is absolutely monumental, considering the size of the city at the time of its construction. As a bonus, some nice views of the town from the steeple, and and occasion to practice your French a little bit. 😊

Few basic facts: this is the third church in the parish since 1831. Before, it was a journey of 17 km to go to the church. The first church was a chapel, but the second was a stone church, built in 1862, which would be an heritage building today. That church was demolished in order to make room for the actual church on the same site, in 1900 (or so), after a decade of discussion about which side of the river the church would be. The church costed 125 000$ and was paid for by the citizen within 8 years.(!!)

After Saint-Georges-de-Beauce (see the video above) here is Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce. A jewel.
