It still looks like that on the Streetview images up to November 2011, but the August 2014 image looks like this.

I tried to get a better view of the old picture on the fence, which turned out to be the one below. It's part of a 31 image slideshow of the restoration at wadecodesign.com.

Appears to be Melrose Avenue [North side, 7000 Block] looking east from La Brea. Undated and dusty. Many structures (to right of Bakery) still there, not as dusty.

Bank of America (not Italy), Cornitius Bros., Taylor & Sons, Mel*Brea Bakery?

Familiar cartouche?

According to a news item I saw relativly recently the Tail O' the Pup has been sitting in a storage facility, but has been recently transported somewhere to be refurbished/restored and the owners hope to find a location where the establishment can reopen.

From the wikipedia entry:

Designed by architect Milton Black, the stand opened at La Cienega and Beverly boulevards in June 1946 to luminary-studded, searchlight-lit fanfare. Eddie Blake purchased the Pup in the early 1970's from its celebrity owners, the dance team of Veloz and Yolanda.

Despite its appearance in countless movies and commercials, the stand faced demolition in the mid-1980s, creating an outcry that resulted in the stand being moved from its original location at 311 North La Cienega Boulevard, to 329 North San Vicente Boulevard.

In December 2005, the Pup was evicted and it moved into a Torrance warehouse.

The picture below is from an article on www.nbclosangeles.com. It looks like the Tail o' the Pup was moved in February this year, and is headed for restoration in Las Vegas. The restoration is said to feature in a History Channel program, although I can't find any info about it on their 'American Restoration' episode guide. The picture is by Alison Martino.

Vintage Los Angeles/NBC Los Angeles

Alison Martino has also made a video about Tail o' the Pup which includes a meeting with 93-year-old Eddie Blake:

Apparently, well before "Murph's" Union "76" ads (Go with the spirit, the spirit of '76), there was the little known or almost forgotten team of "Black and Harris." Could they have peaked too soon?

Here is 1800 E. Ocean Boulevard today.

GSV

It's hard to tell if this was the Army Navy Club or not.
-the style of architecture is hard to date. I think it might have been updated to appear more mid-century modern (but then again, what do I know)
What do you guys think?

While I was turning the google-mobile around, this building directly across the street caught my eye.

GSV

but that isn't the front. It's especially impressive when you view it from the side street, Hermosa Avenue.

I really like this building.

The Cornitius Bros were realtors who appear at 7029 Melrose Avenue in the City Directories of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Strangely, those City Directories list a shoe repair business where the bakery is in the picture. The buildings west of 7025 Melrose (the one with the cartouche) have since been replaced with a Jiffy Lube. This is as close as I could get to the original camera location with the Googlemobile.

GSV

The structure on the right is the La Brea Building. Property websites list its build date as 1925, with propertyshark.com saying it was last altered in 1973. That means it's likely to be the same building that appears as Taylor and Sons in the original picture. I think I prefer the lighter color below.

According to the 1927 CD, Al Monroe was selling tires at 918 South Flower Street.
