That Gretz development looks incredible.

Anyone know how safe the area directly around there is?

It doesn't look toooo bad, however the next two renders of the other new projects down the page are pretty good.

I don't understand why they just show an Ariel of the Wharton Project.

1106 Spring Garden

I was surprised that I actually really liked this render for a new building at 1106 Spring Garden. The old building was quite handsome but this is a nice alternative project that would make a bigger impact:

^^Agree! Looks great. Really wish we could save that building though, and build ontop of it.

If had been a moratorium on these ridiculous sheet-meta panals, philly would have 2 new low-rise buildings in the last 20 years.

Damn the first "architect" to come up with that idea. He should be inducted into the hall of shame immediately.

Another Ridge Avenue Lowrise project, another reason to build out the Ridge Spur to just be the Ridge Subway.

This development seems pretty significant! It appears as though West Catholic has sold their parking lot, along with two other squat structures adjacent to the school building:

Application for conditional zoning permit to construct building for multi-family residential use with 327 dwelling units, 92 accessory parking spaces, 154 bicycle parking spaces, 2 loading spaces and public courtyard, all as shown on attached plans. Removal of existing structures.

there arent many areas in philly that you can say are totally safe, I mean there was just a shooting at 13th and lombard.

Well that's dramatic. Depending on your level of what you consider safe, there are plenty of parts of Philly that are safe for American city standards. Most cities in the US have problems, and there are even shootings in Manhattan occasionally.

Does the crime and violence bleed (no pun intended) into the nicer parts of Philadelphia from time to time? Absolutely. Is it right or justifiable to say it mainly happens in certain parts of the city? No, not really. However, to say "many" areas of Philly aren't totally safe is a little dramatic. One would have some screws loose in their head if they said Midtown Village/the Gayborhood wasn't a safe, urban neighborhood in the US.

It's located on the edge of the "Olde Kensington" neighborhood. It's a very up-and-coming area that has been redeveloping very rapidly because it borders Northern Liberties to the south, and Fishtown to the East. With that said, the Gretz property is on the very edge of what one would consider Olde Kensington (typically described as Girard Ave to the South, Cecil B. Moore Ave to the North, Front Street to the East, and 5th Street to the West), and borders some seedier parts of North Philadelphia.

All in all though, it's dependent on what your specific level of comfortability is. I personally would feel fine there, but with being aware of my surroundings and having some street smarts about me.
