An article from Citylab

Quote:
How Paris Is Trying to Fix One of the Worst Planning Decisions It Ever Made
The city is erecting a grandiose glass canopy over one of its most contested sites as part of a new culture and shopping complex.

FEARGUS O'SULLIVAN

Paris’s greatest new monument is a roof. Not just any old roof mind you—this spectacular new structure will undulate across 2.5 acres of the city, with 16,000 scale-like glass panels suspended from 15 steel ribs that Paris City Hall itself describes as “giant Meccano”. Already referred to simply as “the Canopy,” the roof is currently being bolted together on site in the Les Halles neighborhood. Due for public opening next year as part of a new cultural and shopping complex, the Canopy will do more than give shoppers something new to gawk at and shelter under. It could help correct what some see as the worst planning decision Paris ever made.

This project looks like a total waste, what's the point of having a giant roof if it isn't even enclosed to keep the place warm during the cold winter months?

Just looking at the pictures gives me an uneasy feeling, it looks like it's caving in, even if the structure is perfectly sound there is a psychologic feeling that I have to get out of the way before I'm crushed! They couldn't have just kept the area open with sunlight and some trees/nature?

Between this and the courthouse, have the French lost touch with creating remarkable public spaces and architecture? Your streets and public spaces are envied all over the world. If they wanted to create a modern transit hub why couldn't they have gotten an architect like Santiago Calatrava?

Calatrava's cost overruns would bankrupt The city govt.

i really dont see how you can say that yet, unless you are just going on the renders. its u/c. lets wait and see how it turns out. at the very least its going to be a 1000% improvement over what its replacing.
