More trivia on the Silver tip tree.

Silver tips are a true high elevation fir mostly growing at 6000 -8000 ft . Unlike other species that planted in straight rows, the Red Fir are mostly harvested from natural stands.This generally provides the advantage over lower elevation trees of keeping ability. Since the trees are dormant when they are cut, they tend to hold up longer and better than others, and can be harvested earlier in the Season.

The Silver Tip Christmas tree is native to the high elevations in California. It has long been a favorite for those that like an open growth pattern. The “Silver Tip” refers to the color and placement of the needles. The blue-green color on the tips of the branches is a different color then the interior green of the tree giving the appearance of the silver tipped branch. It has excellent keep ability, and very stiff branched to hold the heaviest of ornaments.

If you can find such a tree during the holiday time, count on about $11.00 per foot. They grow in North Fork, CA and are now shipped by truck to LA.

They've converted the balcony above the garage to a finished room and supersized it! But I was not convinced that this was indeed the house, so let's head down Rhonda Vista a few more feet...

Since the trees were blocking the right hand portion of Mr. Hill's original view, I took the GoogleMobile down the street past the trees. You can see the double garage at an angle to the street, the flat roofed white building and the mountains in the background(you can also see some high rises in Glendale in Mr. Hill's shot). Still not convinced? You drive a hard bargain friend.

ETA: One thing that did bother me with this ID was the street light's shadow in Mr. Hill's photo, I don't think the current street light is far enough from the wall of the angled garage to produce that shadow. My theory is that when they built the green-grey monstrosity(it's picture is in the dictionary for the definition of fugly) they moved the street light for the new driveway.

It took me awhile to confirm...but you are CORRECT BillinGlendaleCA.

The garage across the street has been extended by the same amount as the garage in Mr. Hill's 1979 photo. (as shown below)

Bill wasn't joking.

It's sheer height ruins the sense of scale along the street.

And look at all the ungainly utility wires tethered to it! (after looking more closely / half of the wires are for the neighbors)

I don't understand how they were allowed to built it so tall? It blocks the view of the house -on the corner- across the street. The one in Mr. Hill's photograph.

I would be so pissed.

It's right on the edge of two Baist plates, which I've merged below. This section of (what was) Macy Street now goes under the tracks coming out of Union Station.

I arrowed the "elevated booth" in the USC detail. It may have the same purpose as the one posted by MichaelRyerson, which was identified by Wig-Wag as a "switchtender's box for controlling the turning of streetcars".

The view above is from November 29, 1933, and I initially discounted this as the correct location because there are buildings dead ahead as the car turns onto Main. Then I checked earlier images which showed the area before Macy was extended to Spring. I've marked the extension on the January 1, 1929 view below. It's a shame the picture doesn't extend slightly north.

It's just background detail in this 1931 Dick Whittington shot of Venice Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. There are three images in the set, but the second only shows a small slice of the building at the edge and the third is looking the other way.

Look above the car in the center and you can just see the Hollywoodland sign (top-right, below).

Yesterday when I was looking up contemporary Hollywood Blvd., I saw a very good video (HD from 35mm) posted this year that I hadn't seen before. It's footage of Hollywood Blvd. from N. Orange Dr., just west of the Chinese Theatre, traveling east to just before the Warner (Pacific) Theatre at Stromberg Jewelers.

Movies on several marquees date the footage to 1966 and two clocks, one digital (First Federal Bldg.) and the other (Stromberg's sidewalk clock), place the time at 10:11 a.m. and it's either 75° or 79°.

The name Hollywood Graham comes from one of my cars it is a 1941 Graham Hollywood.

The video was taken while I was working behind the medical center on McCadden and Hollywood. The med center had Diamond Jim's restaraunt on the corner. At 7:44 on the video counter is an open space and if I remember it was a Victorian type house set back from the street. I always was amazed that it had not been torn down and a building put there. Thanks for finding the video , nice to see Collectors Book Shop and Pickwick Books again.
