Where was everybody? I'm surprised we didn't have a bigger turnout for our 10th Anniversary NLA Celebration, which we had to hold a day early so it wouldn't interfere with workday traffic, because, as you see, we blocked off Main St. and partied in the street. Wait a minute . . . Did the NLA Fiesta Committee remember to send out the invitations? Who's on the Fiesta Committee, anyway?

But I can report that a good time was had by all, especially since we few had to drink up all the Brew 102 we had collected for the whole membership. hic

While I was still sober, I took a snapshot, which I hope the History Committee will place in the group's official Book of Record:

I hope everyone will mark their calendars and attend the 25th Anniversary NLA Celebration. Plan ahead!

I tried to find more information on ore sampling businesses in early Los Angeles County but came up empty.

Perhaps the photographers, Howland & Chadwick, specialized in occupational cabinet cards.

As you can see, the description of the photos are written in Russian under ea. pic. (most are of tourist spots...a few are 'mystery' locations)

WWII warships had a calculating instrument called a "computer." It was used to calibrate the trajectories of the big guns and it was mechanical rather than electronic. It was right around this time that the first true computers were developed and the word ceased to be used for non-electronic instruments.

I'm pretty sure that's Vermont Ave, looking north, just below the Greek Theatre. Here's a pic for comparison:

Are we sure the address on the sign isn't the address of this lot? Or at least very close to it?

7001 Hollywood Blvd.

We've been to Hillcrest Motors at 7001 Hollywood Bl. before:

But the building currently occupying 7001 Hollywood was built in 1929, and those vehicles in the used car lot appear to be mid 30's models. Perhaps this used lot is on a nearby block.

Martin Turnbull has a late 40's image of the building at 7001 plus a parking lot on the opposite corner of Orange Dr., but you can see Grauman's in that image. We can't see Grauman's in the 'mystery' image above.

Under the part of the sign that says HILLCREST, you can see the address of 7001 Hollywood Blvd.

I can't locate any other old photos of the location, but GaylordWilshire mentions a Hillcrest being at that location in his post here from 2012.

As Lomara mentions in her post above, the pictures don't seem to match, though (no Chinese Theater)... perhaps this is a satellite lot, with the sign advertising the location of the main dealer location?
