Where was everybody? I'm surprised we didn't have a bigger turnout for our 10th Anniversary NLA Celebration, which we had to hold a day early so it wouldn't interfere with workday traffic, because, as you see, we blocked off Main St. and partied in the street. Wait a minute . . . Did the NLA Fiesta Committee remember to send out the invitations? Who's on the Fiesta Committee, anyway?

But I can report that a good time was had by all, especially since we few had to drink up all the Brew 102 we had collected for the whole membership. hic

While I was still sober, I took a snapshot, which I hope the History Committee will place in the group's official Book of Record:

an odinthor studio production

I hope everyone will mark their calendars and attend the 25th Anniversary NLA Celebration. Plan ahead!

I finally got a hold of the Fiesta Committee. They said they would have the invitations ready in a week or two.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to drive down the Miracle Mile at night in 1960.

"Original 35mm Slide, Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles 1960."

Ebay

The building illustrated on the large billboard [at far right] appears to be the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas.

Here's a closer look.

And here's the Riviera Hotel in 1960.

ONLINENEVADA

I believe it's a match.

Did anyone notice the Arthur Murray sign in the ebay slide?

This is as close as I could get to the original with GSV. The Bekins building, on the corner of Erwin, is now Studio Self Storage.

Wow! I occasionally go to the Chinese takeout place there (it's between the “Cricket” store and the Dollar Tree on the right).

I never would have recognized it if you hadn't pointed it out, Hoss!

COM'PU-TIST, n. A computer.

Here's what an early computer looked like at her desk:

(They were almost uniformly women).

And the innards of the machine:

Drat. I was prepared to celebrate in style with my vintage gee-haw whammy diddle.

Thanks for the help GW.

I tried to find more information on ore sampling businesses in early Los Angeles County but came up empty.

Perhaps the photographers, Howland & Chadwick, specialized in occupational cabinet cards.
Check out this early Los Angeles blacksmith shop, also by Howland & Chadwick.... HERE

The following photographs were taken by a Russian living in the United States between 1936 t0 1940.

As you can see, the description of the photos are written in Russian under ea. pic. (most are of tourist spots...a few are 'mystery' locations)

Aren't there more than one entrance to Griffin Park? If so, which one is this?

#4
EBAY

The northeast corner of Vine & Sunset.

#5
EBAY

At first glance I thought this was RKO along Gower. . .but I see the Russian wrote "R.C.A." (and that's what is on the circular sign above the front entrance)

The next one is a mystery location.

WWII warships had a calculating instrument called a "computer." It was used to calibrate the trajectories of the big guns and it was mechanical rather than electronic. It was right around this time that the first true computers were developed and the word ceased to be used for non-electronic instruments.

I'm pretty sure that's Vermont Ave, looking north, just below the Greek Theatre. Here's a pic for comparison:

Google Maps

If you look closely, you can see that the mountains match the Russian's photograph.

Hillcrest Motor Co

Are we sure the address on the sign isn't the address of this lot? Or at least very close to it?

7001 Hollywood Blvd.

We've been to Hillcrest Motors at 7001 Hollywood Bl. before:

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=24015

But the building currently occupying 7001 Hollywood was built in 1929, and those vehicles in the used car lot appear to be mid 30's models. Perhaps this used lot is on a nearby block.

Martin Turnbull has a late 40's image of the building at 7001 plus a parking lot on the opposite corner of Orange Dr., but you can see Grauman's in that image. We can't see Grauman's in the 'mystery' image above.

http://martinturnbull.com/2013/03/25...he-late-1940s/

What's the number on the top of the Hillcrest Motor Co. sign? 6401? 7401?

Under the part of the sign that says HILLCREST, you can see the address of 7001 Hollywood Blvd.

I can't locate any other old photos of the location, but GaylordWilshire mentions a Hillcrest being at that location in his post here from 2012.

As Lomara mentions in her post above, the pictures don't seem to match, though (no Chinese Theater)... perhaps this is a satellite lot, with the sign advertising the location of the main dealer location?

Could this be it?

https://rescarta.lapl.org/ResCarta-W...40507/00000020

To be honest, the photo doesn't look much like Canon Drive....

Just to be clear, the quote merely attributed the "concept" as being "uniquely American." That doesn't mean it wasn't shared, embraced or even co-opted by others.

Curiously, there is even a trading stamp tie-in with the "Moon Fire Temple" located in Topanga Canyon. https://www.moonfireranch.com/story https://la.curbed.com/2012/12/28/102...s-hippie-ranch
Lewis Beach Marvin III, the heir to the totally uncool S&H Green Stamps fortune (they were those stamps you'd get at the grocery store that you could trade in for prizes), bought the property in 1957 for $15,000 and "Over the next two decades, Mr. Marvin's estate became part-salon, part-muse for his motley crew of artistic friends." Those friends included, naturally, George Harrison, Andy Warhol, Tommy Chong, and Jim Morrison, as well as the Manson Family, supposedly, although the WSJ doesn't mention them.https://la.curbed.com/2012/12/28/102...s-hippie-ranch
Venice has little to do with the temple other than geographic proximity.
