^Bank street south of Gloucester is a pretty good commercial main street, but it could be even better if they signalized every intersection south to Gladstone.
It wouldn't be cheap, but it would basically allow safe pedestrian crossings at every block.
Where the cross-street is really small, the traffic lights don't even have to permit through traffic. They can be effectively be always switched to green on Bank, and be stop signs for the cross-street, unless a pedestrian presses the button to cross. This would be similar to the set up they have
in Vancouver where pretty much every block in a major urban neighbourhood is signalized with a flashing green light and pedestrian crossing.
Gestures like this are what make Vancouver probably the most walkable city among those that were really built for the car (wide arterial roads everywhere, easy parking).
