What a huge benefit this will be for visitors.

I know whenever I land in a new city the first thing I want is food and having to explore to find it really sucks. Also non-Canadians (and I guess Canadians too hah) will love seeing a Tim's the second they pull off the airport lot!

They don't need to leave the airport to see a Tim's.

Don't forget that there's two hotels and Cougar at that roundabout and Airport Heights across the street.

New brewpub planned for old east end fire station on Duckworth Street:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfou...reet-1.4307067

"The plan is to renovate the building to host a coffee shop during the day, and a brewpub at night that offers 15 different types of draught beer ranging from light lagers to IPAs and stouts."

The artists rendering doesn't really look like it takes into account the slope in that area...you'd have to level it off and put a small wall there for a patio i'd think...

So I was out and about today and noticed they are building something on the corner of Cashin Ave and Pennwell Rd where the old Irving use to be. Anyone know what’s going there? According to the City Council minutes it’s approved for mixed usage. I had heard a rumour and only an old rumour that Dairy Queen might be interested in that location. That being said I googled DQ locations for our area and what came up was unexpected...that Dairy Queen is listed for 259 Blackmarsh Rd directly across the street from Dominion where the Tim Hortons/gas Station was supposed to have gone.

Not sure of any tenants for that location but ooks to be a retail strip mall being built by Martek.

Thanks for posting this JCE. That does kinda look like it could be a DQ on the end of the strip mall and it has a drive thru on the site map too.

Weird that they would build a DQ here and one on Blackmarsh Rd too. Kinda close to one another. But I guess all the permits are likely not in yet so time will tell if these actually happen. These plans always tend to change from conception to completion.

Milestones Restaurant on Hebron has closed its doors (though temporarily) it says.
From what I hear, ownership of the franchise has reverted back to corporate CARA.

Still seems strange that they would shut down in what would presumably be the busiest time of year...

Seems like par for the course for restaurants around here.

Sudden and surprise closure.
Notice on the door that says "Temporary only. We'll be reopening soon!"
3 Months pass, not reopened.
5 Months pass, notice on door disappears.
7 Months pass, signage on building is taken down.
12 Months pass, it's a new business entirely.

I know my small sample may not be the general consensus, but I've been there twice and my experience both times were below par.

Went there once, everyone at table decided they'd never return. None of us have.

I guarantee you, whoever opened this restaurant had ZERO restaurant experience ! They did great when they first opened, but once the initial craze settled, they had no clue how to properly manage and run such a large operation. This restaurant was beautiful looking, but lets call a spade a spade : it had numerous things going against it right from the start:

# 1 WAYYYYYYYYYYY too expensive.
# 2 Service was always terrible. They always hired "cute" young girls, who cared more about their cell phones, and what party they went to last night, to give a damn about if your meals were properly prepared ! But when it came to pay --- wow were they ever attentive , because it was tip time !!
#3 The Menu needed to be more geared towards NL's tastes. I realize that this is a west coast of Canada franchise, and their menu is more modern, but that will only fly so long here in this Province.

I think the franchise are in for a tuff road ahead with this store. With the state of the local economy and all, this store needs a complete overhaul from the top down.

^What was wrong with the menu? There are plenty of restaurants that don't cater to NL tastes in the city that do quite well. There are only so many places you can serve dry, greasy deep fried cod before it's overkill.

I have no issue with Milestones. It isn't that much more expensive than other Cara restaurants, but the food is much better than say Swiss Chalet or Montana's. It's a possibility that the restaurant was poorly managed, yeah, and service did leave something to be desired at some points. This could also be a major mechanical issue within the restaurant.
