Yeah, it's going to be mall eventually. They must not be able to get financing right away or something.

^For what it's worth, 217 W 57th (Nordstrom Tower) in NYC is a mall.

Regarding the hotel at 253 W Cermak Rd that was discussed here in 2013...

I was in Chinatown yesterday and noticed a general construction fence on the site but for some reason I didn't think to see if anything was going on (I don't remember seeing any construction equipment there though).
I was going through building permits and they got one February 2, 2015, to add a 5th floor to the 4 story building to go from 72 rooms to 108 rooms.

A DNAinfo article from March 2014 said the developer was still looking for a hotel operator. (The name of the hotel is what brought my search back to the forum.)

^(^) Re Chinatown hotel: Retroactive building permit? It's been 5 stories and topped-out for a while now, no?

Reminds me of The Scott Residences apartment project in Old Town. A couple years back, they (well, this isn't a building permit, but zoning entitlement to build) got Plan Commission, Zoning Committee and Council approval to build what was already well under construction (had a good deal of steel up at that point).........'administrative' errors??

Financing? AFAIK this thing is quite early in the planning stages still. Macerich may have head their eye to some extent on this parcel for some time, but they only recently bought it in what was likely a quite competitive bidding process.....who knows what their timetable will be for actual development form this point. Maybe they'll firm something up by the end of the year and then try to move forward aggressively through the entitlement process and begin construction by the end of 2016. Also, maybe they hold off and don't move forward until the beginning of the next cycle, early 2020s

My understanding from what the developer and architect has said, as well as what I see happening on the site, that the hospital building is not being demoed: just de-clad, squared off and recladded in brick.

Certainly the building in the rendering has the same general massing as the existing building.

I should've said partially demolished.

^ It's McCaffery, so this may require patience (and low expectations for an assured VE-shitshow to come).

Actually, let's talk design architect here. Wasn't it SOM that did some drawings for the project while in entitlements?

So, in other words, the actual design architect will be..............

.............you know (I give it 95% chance)

Who even knows. The local NIMBYs are appealing the court's Jan. 1st decision to throw out their bullshit case. They're even propping-up NIMBY queen Caroline Vickrey to run for alderman in 43. You know things are bad in LP when Michele Smith is the pro-development candidate.

Yeah, the LPers are planning to appeal the judge's decision from what I've heard. They probably want to tie this up in courts as long as possible.

Do you have a source? Ald. Smith seemed to think the ruling dismissing the lawsuit was dispositive. And she's a former prosecutor.

This is from a DNA Info article:

Quote:
Smith said the decision to dismiss the lawsuit means the project has the green light.

"I have been told by the city that this is a conclusive determination of the suit," Smith said. "Therefore, [the developer] is completely free to go forward."
