Access to earlier listings or paper archives might be helpful. For some reasons I recall reading another name may have graced that location but I can't presently verify.

Googies presentation seemed to be well thought out. Pippy's seems to have been a mishmash of competing signage.

A better image that JD would recognize. Probably from the '50s. Notice second sign: "Googies Coffee Shop."

Nice photo spread by the L.A. Times on the opening of Union Station.

Tom McCahill was the best. I used to buy Mechanix Illustrated just to read his articles.

I didn't realize that he had died way back in 1974.

The bigorangelandmarks link has a small picture that's similar to the one below, but it doesn't show the original roof signs. USC dates this picture as 1932.

Well, just south of Young's Market on Union Ave. is the old Charleston Hotel & Apts.

The USC picture above shows that the Charleston Hotel used to be the Hotel Strand.

Detail of picture above.

e_r's full post includes more pictures of Young's Market, the Charleston Hotel and several other buildings in the area:

The 1932 date for the Young's Market picture is confirmed by another picture in the same set. This view of the Boos Bros. Cafeteria at 530 South Hill comes complete with Olympic flags.

I think I'll go for the 30¢ luncheon.

Seems like Old Times with the Boos Bros.

When I saw the Boos Bros cafeterias, I thought we should revisit their palatial LA homes. Photos, thanks to the peripatetic Gaylord Wilshire.

I loved seeing the two giant Y rooftop signs on Young's Market.
Oh, and I just noticed there's a small bowling alley in the pool hall photo I posted yesterday. It's way in the back.

Here's another pretty rare postcard.

ebay
Nellie drew her face in the window of room 34. -cute.

533 South Grand Avenue places it next door to the Mayflower Hotel. So I thought it might appear in some vintage shots of the hotel.

Nope, no Hotel Key West. (this is 1943 so it's a bit late for the Hotel Key West)

This is such a great photograph I had to post it again.
http://hardboiledmartini.wordpress.com/

The Hotel Key West was also close to the State Normal School, so I searched those photos as well.
I finally found it in the lower right corner of a 1913 panoramic photo taken from the Normal School.

just for fun..a close-up of the roof.

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...id/1303/rec/94

-with a few of it's neighbors..on the same side of the street is the Hotel Marlboro.

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...id/1303/rec/94

-Now that I think about it, maybe the Mayflower Hotel was built on the same lot as the Hotel Key West. What do you think?
__

I realize the 1913 panorama with the Hotel Key West has been posted before...so don't bother to point that out to me.

While searching for the Hotel Key West I came across this photograph of the State Normal School in 1904.

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/

I was flabbergasted by the sheer size of that cliff in the background. It almost looks like a matte painting!

Here's a circa 1910 shot looking across Pershing Square (this may also have been posted before).

Near the center is the Hotel Key West. There's no signage on the front, but the 1909 CD confirms the name.

Hmmm.... the shape and size of the Moderne-ish building to the left of the Mayflower in 1943 shot made me wonder if the old Key West hadn't been remodeled. Then I found this article--not that it's definitive.

The Skid Row Slasher. I thought this photograph was rather noirish.

That's a great shot of the front of the Hotel Key West HossC. -thx for posting it.

This is a 1961 photo of the Hangover Restaurant on Vine Street, probably at Selma Ave.
I noticed the photo because of the Seaboard Loans sign which is visible on the outdoor
scenic backdrop of the hotel room when I Love Lucy travelled to Hollywood.

H.P./Torrence

Update:

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=28328

THIS POST FROM MAY, 2015, a year from this one, lists the address for THE HANGOVER
located: ...on the NE corner of Vine and Leland Way at No. 1456.

(Now I know it wasn't at SELMA, which is north of Sunset, but I didn't notice
the NBC building in this photo!)

I’ve found some posts relating to the “Zebra Room” in the Townhouse Hotel, but
I found this photo dated 1941...source doesn’t list an address or other location.

H.P./Torrence

“Cape Cod Room” as well!

The Jade at 6619 Hollywood Blvd.

The Jade Lounge at Jerry’s Joynt in Chinatown has been previously posted about and in January e_r did a post about the Jade Restaurant in Hollywood and posted some interiors.

See this post:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=18849

Lorendoc did a follow-up post with another interior shot and some further info about the place.

See this post:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=18872

Lorendoc said: “I will try to write some more about the Jade and its denizens, if people are interested.” Some posters expressed interest, but Lorendoc hasn’t posted any more yet. We’re still interested if you want to, Lorendoc!

In e_r’s post he wrote about The Jade: “It sounds like an enormous place. I can't remember, have we seen the exterior before on noirish?”

I do not find that we have, and I’ve found a couple of 1937 photos of it.

The Jade: Serving “Pink Jest Cocktails’!

The Virginia (?) on the second floor.

You like rooftop signs, e_r, but what is that on the roof? Does anyone know?

H.P./Torrence

Bradley’s is across the street so that street is Cherokee.

1937 - NW corner Hollywood and Cherokee
LAPL

Godzilla posted the above photo of Bradley’s here:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=10460

According to information on Martin Turnbull’s Garden of Allah website, this Bradley’s had a gay clientele. And Lorendoc posted a couple noirish items about The Jade, across the street!

Could this be the Virginia Apartments at 6629½ Hollywood Boulevard where John Ford once lived? The extract below is from a book called 'Print the Legend: The Life and Times of John Ford' by Scott Eyman.

To be honest, I only included the quote about the Murphy Bed because it's the closest I could get to a "noirish man".

LAPL

In one spot, the LAPL dates this picture as 1955... anyway, the curious box on top came later than the era of the cars in the shot. Would love to know what the box was--what could it have been advertising?

LAPL

As for Bradley's across Cherokee...the building started out as a bank, then, before the five-and-dime, "'...something strange' was going on at Bradley's, something involving queers"...

Looks like the Virginia had some class. I spotted a rare 1936 Cord Winchester trying to hide around the corner.

conceptcars.com

The Cord was a sales failure when new, but is now considered an all-time classic. Maybe the backside wasn't so pretty, but it sported a very unique front.

velocityjournal.com

There was at least one other Cord in Los Angeles. This 1937 photo is from the corner of Highland and Sunset, and shows Curries Ice Cream, which was at 6775 Sunset Blvd. (according to the info linked with the photo.) Notice that the "hidden" headlights are exposed on this car. The lights were raised and lowered by a crank in the interior.
