Absolutely! I'm sick of all those ugly Kaufman hotels popping up in or near Times Square.

I know what you mean. Although Midtown added some very tall buildings in the 00s (BofA, NYTT, 4 TS etc.) they don't make much of an impact. New York's skyline is just too massive, it literally absorbs 500 - 900 footers. So the only way to make a mark on the skyline is to go supertall. Soon, even that won't be enough (see One57 or Tower Verre, they are kind of getting lost).

Downtown's comeback is also impressive. Of course there's the WTC. 3WTC is under construction again, and only 2WTC (and 5WTC, hotel maybe) remain. Slowly but surely it's all coming together. Then you have a massive residential / hotel boom as well. It begann with the Beekman, and will culminate in 125 Greenwhich, a residential tower which shares the same roof height as 1WTC, in Lower Manhattan! That was totally out of the question not too long ago. And now, look what's happening: 30 Park, 56 Leonard, 45 Park, 112 Fulton, 80 South Street (a future 1,000 footer) ...

Good times.

As One57 and 1WTC are complete, the smileys are less when it comes to supertalls, but no worries! ... because in a couple of months, many projects in demo will start rising. I do wonder though when it comes to Park Lane if YIMBY was just referring to the renderings being outdated or the 100 floors being outdated? I'm hoping its just the renderings, and not the parameters.

For some reason Kaufman does mid-rises better. His smaller projects are pretty good, but when he tries to do highrises, its a giant fail aesthetically. Hopefully he will continue to do structures that are less that 14 stories, and let the pros work on the bigger ones.

Remember that Extell has that development site at 8th & 45th street, with over one million square feet of developable space, and not a huge footprint.

Extell has stated they plan a residential/hotel tower, so there's a good possibility it will be supertall (plot was previously owned by Related which planned a 50 floor office tower). And Extell has been gobbling up additional air rights in the neighborhood, so I would expect something quite tall and prominent.

A recent helicopter ride as of Nov 10, 2014.

Chris's rules for optimal enjoyment:

1) Skip to 5:35 mark; before that was just liftoff and bad angles

We can really see how large the HY project will be and a sea of cranes already.
One57 and 432 Park Ave fit in so well.

I'd recommend skipping to that 5:35 mark, pause, then mute the video, put some of this on (inception song), turn on the video below with is song (In HD with the song loud), and enjoy:

Note:
Must have it started at the 5:35 mark as the climax of the song corresponds the best with the epic view of midtown and the supertall corridor.

News: 3 Manhattan West is now 662ft/202m. At least it's still over 200m.

Nice vid showing 425 Park Avenue (and the skyline): http://www.yimbynews.com/2014/11/new...rk-avenue.html

3 Manhattan West is 702 ft. per official building permits. All permits show the exact same height.

The City Council should let them build higher/denser near HY. That area needs fresh air badly

To provide you with some perspective on just how much is going up, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat there are currently 228 skyscrapers (500+ feet) in New York City. Thus, the 63 residential projects will account for a 27% increase in the total number of towers. In fact, there are more residential towers planned for the city than the total existing skyscraper counts in all but ten cities on Earth. Booming London for instance only has 14 buildings more than 500 feet and just five under construction.
Learn something new everyday. Thats just an amazing fact right there.

New York and Hong Kong account for almost one-fifth of the world’s skyscrapers. Data compiled by The Center on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s (CTBUH), Skyscraper Center

Although the 300m + category will change dramatically in the next 5 years.

^ Yup. Although Chinese cities are notoriously undercounted. New York too btw, as I count more than 250 buildings over 500 feet. And the 300m+ category needs an update as 6 supertalls are completed (even on CTBUH).

The boom is beyond befief. (had to try some ...)

The CTBUH has launched its 2015 Conference website. “Global Interchanges: Resurgence of the Skyscraper City” will be held in New York from 26-30 Oct. 2015

Quote:
Conference Synopsis

After a post-recession hiatus in tall building construction in many countries lasting several years, numerous cities in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Australia are again resurgent. Nowhere is this more evident than in New York, where several new urban typologies are developing simultaneously. In addition, the increasing importance of both resilient infrastructure in the face of mounting climate change, as well as quality public space, are adding to a fascinating mix.

Yet the flow of capital enabling many of these projects is complex, and shows an interconnectedness of cities. Developments in Sydney are as likely to be driven by forces from Shanghai as locally, Canadian pension funds are enabling several tall buildings in London, and Middle East capital seems, once again, to be everywhere. Also, after a decade or more of unprecedented vertical growth in Chinese cities, China is now investing in myriad urban centers around the world. The New York conference will explore what this all means for the future of the skyscraper. Join us to find out more.

An older proposal. I believe it was one of those recession era projects, but like many, they tend to come back eventually. American Continental Property made the purchase of a site in which they tend to develop. Might be a stale proposal at this point.

It's a 70 floor condo tower planned by American Continental, using air rights from the adjacent synagogue.

Hopefully they do NYC's Commercial Boom Parts 1 -3. Residential is hot, but office as well in all of the boroughs. IF we factor in office, the 150m category will be much higher in the next year or two.
