Galactic Empire is better than 80% of existing US State flags.

I dont care for that design at all, but it is definitely an ode to the church.

The State of the Hive — When Brigham Young and the Latter-day Saints arrived in Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847, Young chose the name “Deseret” for their new home, and the beehive as its emblem, symbolizing the kind of cooperative work that would be required to make the desert bloom. Images of bees and beehives—the traditional skep, five of which the Mormons brought with them on their trek—were used in much early church construction embellishments. Notably, on the interior and exterior of the Salt Lake Temple and, famously, on Brigham Young’s own Beehive House, which is crowned with a carved bee skep. Newell posts, doorknobs, windows and all bore the emblem of a beehive...

We place a premium on work and self reliance, but I laugh at the fact that most of my fellow members dont see how totally socialist the concept of a beehive is. LOL.

IMHO this is by far the best state flag and as flags go it's very traditional:

The design of the flag comes from the shield in the coat of arms of the Calvert family, the colonial proprietors of Maryland.

George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore, adopted a coat of arms that included a shield with alternating quadrants featuring the yellow-and-black colors of his paternal family and the red-and-white colors of his maternal family, the Crosslands.

It's also VERY common in Hawaii with the Hawaii State Flag & to a lesser extent the Sovereignty Flag.

About flags on pop culture, the new Lady Gaga video for 911 features lots of West/Mexican/missions desert themes and New Mexico flag appears in a very beautifully done shot.

Another song I hear a lot, When Love Takes Over (David Guetta and Kelly Rowland), we have this very typical Los Angeles beaches scenes and the California flag also appears.

as one of the most widely flown city flags anywhere in the world, the chicago flag is extremely iconic locally, and because of its clean straightforward design with the 4 prominent red 6-pointed stars, it lends itself to all kinds of alternate designs/parodies and applications on clothing, tattoos, coffee mugs, beer koozies, bike bags, umbrellas, pretty much anything.

and so on.......

just google image search "chicago flag tattoo" for literally thousands of results.

My favorite chicago flag tattoo story was this time at a bar down in florida and I got carded by the bouncer and as he looked at my ID he read my address outloud back to me and then said " hey, I know where you live, I'm Humboldt Park born and raised" and proceeded to lift up the back of his t-shirt to reveal a bitching chicago skyline tat with the city flag as the sky spread across the top of his back. He then signalled to the bar tender that my first drink was on the house.

It is a stunning flag.

I found it so cute that Lord Baltimore was married to Anne Arundell, and in MD, Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties are adjacent to each other.

Houston's city flag was designed in 1915. It features the city seal in the center of a star. The city seal has a train on it because at the time is was adopted, Houston's nickname was "The city where seventeen railroads meet the sea". It also has a cotton gin below the train because at the time, Houston's economy relied on cotton. Also a star above the train for the lone star state.

My hometown of Mesa, AZ has a pretty good city flag that is almost entirely unknown by city residents. They had it commissioned in about 2005 and for some unknown reason have let it sit basically unused ever since (except by me--I've got one flying at my house):

^ I quite like that Mesa one!

Michigan's state flag is pretty bad. As a kid, I used to like it because I thought it was cool how the elk and moose stood on their hind legs, facing each other. But it's just too busy. It is notable that the man in the seal is holding a rifle-type gun in his left hand. I think that's the only state to depict something like that, although you would never know by glancing at it, because it's so small in the context of what else is going on. I do see our state flag flying occasionally at private residences, but nowhere near the frequency of other states already mentioned on here -

Kalamazoo's flag is just as uninspiring as Michigan's. I'm sure this is the case with most small cities. It has some smoke stacks, which are... nice? I can instantly recognize Chicago's flag, but if not for the name emblazoned on it, I would never be able to pick out Kalamazoo's from a lineup of other similar flags. I much prefer the proposal / idea someone else envisioned -

Grand Rapids has a newer banner / logo, which it uses more often than its official flag, and I hate it. Maybe it's an improvement over the official flag, but it looks like Pacman with lipstick. The blue squiggle is the river, the yellow circle is the sun, and the lipstick is the red Calder "La Grande Vitesse" sculpture (i.e. the rapids) -

Milwaukee is currently in the process of possibly adopting a new city flag.

The current official city flag is an epically terrible, "so bad, it's almost kinda good", hot mess of a design:

Source: wikipedia

but sometime last decade, a citizen's group held a design contest for a new flag they dubbed "the people's flag of milwaukee". This was the winning entry:

Source: wikipedia

While the politicians have been wrangling over whether or not to ditch the old flag for the new one, the new flag has been not so quietly taking over, unofficially. It can be found flying on homes and businesses, on t-shirts and other clothing, coffee mugs, etc. It seems like the foot-dragging by the politicians won't matter in the end as the people themselves have taken to their new flag, perhaps in part as a bit of a middle finger to the do-nothing politicians.

Salt Lake City actually just adopted a new flag too. There was a big competition with lots of cool entries but they ended up choosing a pretty boring design, imo.

New:

They went with a "upside down Bavaria but with a flower that looks like a butthole" aesthetic.

Just to throw it out there, the San Francisco city flag:

https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/93238654755497646/

The motto is a little fuzzy. It's "Oro en Paz, Fierro en Guerra" = "Gold in peace, fire in war". The gold and fire connections should be fairly obvious as should the phoenix rising from the fire.
