Yes, you know me too well--those flowers were the first thing I looked at in the photo. I'm thinking Marguerite Daisies (Argyranthemum frutescens), which used to have much more of a vogue than they do these days, and which I used to grow way way back in the days of the dinosaurs when I was just a li'l clod-hopper. Same (one gathers) as the lady in the pic, my mother was very fond of Marguerite Daisies. The sign probably says, "Please don't pick the daisies--dangerous attack dog!!!"

The only location information for this c. 1923-24 photo is somewhere in Los Angeles County. Does anyone recognize this
house, which seems to be on a corner? At the left base of the upper set of stairs is a small sign that might have the house
number, but I can't read it:

487575 at Huntington Digital Library

Don't know where this is-- not sure I see a sign on the steps; it may just be shadow-pay again, but could that be "542" or "543" carved into the top of the porch column? If so... that could mean above Sixth on a sloping street, and, given the architecture, in a ritzy district more likely east of Hoover...if this isn't in some other Calif city altogether....

The obliging Mr. Google took me for a quick spin in his jalopy, and we ran across this house at 2115 (?) Park Grove Avenue which I post for no reason other than it looked so pleasant (and about the diametric opposite of noirish!). The (?) is because I couldn't actually spot an address on the structure. (Address 2117 had a fire in 1965, which, according to the Los Angeles Times of February 11, 1965, "burned out the attic of a two-story, three-family dwelling" at that address; the Times had nothing for 2115.)

Thanks for taking a look at that house, GW. You're right, it could be anywhere. I thought I'd take a chance to see if
someone recognized it. Below in the center is what I thought might be that house number sign I mentioned, but I
guess it could just be part of the flowers:

Getting back to 2619 Figueroa . . . it could be a shadow, but I still think it looks more like a dent:

In addition, I am pleased that you felt the photo of 2601 and 2619 Figueroa was good enough to add to your blog.

Thanks for identifying the flowering plant odinthor. I appreciate your expertise.

I believe this is Argyranthemum frutescens as well.

I initially read Marguerite Daisies as Marguerite Duras.

A bit of ephemera.

ebay

here's the same building today.

gsv

The building has lost it's 3 tall vertical windows and 4 smaller windows that faced E. Hubbard St.

I tried (unsuccessfully) to find a video of 'Nature's Fairyland'.

5401 So. Central Avenue.

Who would like to see the interior of this building when it was Silver's Drug Store back in 1940?

Here's the Liquor area. (it appears the small windows have been covered over)

There was probably an accident that occurred in the store.

If you look closely at the building there is some writing...but it's very difficult to read.

detail

I thought one of you NLAers might be able to figure it out.

I think that there's been more than one set of letters on that sign, which is making it hard to read. I found a reference to that address being Marsden's Pharmacy in the mid-1930s, and I think I can make out "MARSDEN" in the letters, possibly "MARSDEN BLDS".

This is 2111 Park Grove Ave--built on two lots of the Kerr Tract in 1900--one of those late-Victorian houses built in LA that was considered old-fashioned in less than a decade.... Even its builder had one of those great old-lady names-- Mrs. Minerva F. Shively, who was holding receptions in her new house by the first of the next year. In 1947, a later owner donated the house to the Woodcraft Rangers, a "youth character-building" adjunct of the Community Chest. More recently, the house has belonged to the Robinsons of 27 St James Park--a couple who have restored quite a few Victorians in the area for USC housing. They call 2111 Park Grove "Woodcraft Manor."

Here's a quick glimpse inside.

"This sprawling, nine-room student house was designed in 1901 by renowned architect John C. Austin, whose work included City Hall,
the Griffith Observatory, the Shrine Auditorium and USC's Old College."

Thanks for your help CBD and HossC.

I agree Hoss, there appears to be more than one set of letters.
Marsden and a later owner (or vice versa)

Anyone close to the area want to check it out?

More 2111 Park Grove

I found I had previously gathered some material on that house.

Minerva Francis Shively (d. 1912) in the 1902 LACD:

This guy's mother was a Shivley, so maybe Minerva was his aunt?:

History of the Bench and Bar of Southern California (1909) @ Google Books

Before 2111 Park Grove was home to the Woodcraft Rangers, the house had become sanitarium:

Well, druggist Harold F. Marsden built it in 1923--apparently he still owned it and ran the drugstore as late as 1959...so I'd say it was "MARSDEN BLDG"-- later owners included Harry I. Resnik, John Cornish, Sergio Orioli, Jesse Oronoz, and Avalon Properties.

Interesting to see the Townsend Pension Plan mentioned.

I couldn't locate any tokens but I found these poster-stamps.

https://www.ssa.gov/history/towns5.html

could this be currency (?)

You'd think thousands of trade tokens would be floating around online. -like on ebay.
I wonder why I wasn't able to find just one example
