Lucien Lagrange of course is a hack, and nowhere near the reputability or ability of Stern and his firm. But people from Chicago should face up to the fact that Lagrange is a hometown hack, and one that received a lot of high profile and successful commissions in their city. Between Stern and Lagrange, they're better off here with Stern.

And I disagree that a 850' tower can't be filler, especially when the tower is designed to be inoffensive and crowd-pleasing.

thank you for making up more of your stories.

when have chicagoans on this forum, generally speaking, ever denied that lagrange is a hack who has greatly shamed our city's architectural legacy with his unrelenting hackery?

if you had been reading chicago threads on this forum for the past 17 years like i have, you'd know it's one of the most repeatedly beaten dead horses this forum has ever known.

no argument there, stern is a far more capable architect than lagrange could ever hope to be. but the issue here is that there is very loud cadre of chicago forumers who have a bad habit of obnoxiously repeating themselves in expressing their contempt for ANY-FUCKING-THING that might even hint at PoMo. they utterly detest lagrange, and they hate stern too.

as for me, i'm cautiously meh on this project. it certainly won't be a great building, but i think it has the potential to maybe be ok. execution and VE issues will of course be pivotal. we'll see......

an 850' tall building certainly can be filler if the context around it is all supertall towers, but that is not the context of this project. in streeterville, this 850' tower will be the tallest building by a decent margin for several blocks in all directions. it will stand out. it will be noticed. for better or worse.

Does the garage extend this far west ?

These are what the vibrator are for - the wet clay preserves the old pilings very well.

I talked to a construction worker at the site this morning.

He told me that we could see caisson work beginning within the next week or so.

He said Monday, but I'm not going to hold them to a specific day.

Apparently a number of the caissons will be going down to rock for this one.

It'll be under construction when they start drilling.

Hold your horses... That's coming soon enough.

One of the construction workers mentioned that the caisson work would probably start in the afternoon. These pictures were take around noon.

It seems like half the motivation of re-landscaping the park was to give them a staging area. Other sites make do with less, but should help their efficiency I guess.

Officially Under Construction.

First caisson now started.

Looks like it'll be down to the rock.

the facts got mixed up on this one. the chicago architecture blog erroneously reported that caisson rigs where at work on this site several weeks ago, so i assumed it was U/C and moved the thread.

now it's just finally officially "officially" under construction.

good news either way,

and thanks for the confirmation pics, bvic!

Wanna be excited. Wanna be excited.

At least there will be a nice new peak in the skyline between the river and Water Tower.

I'm saving my nanners for Vista, but glad to see another start and the death of another vacant lot.

I missed that. Ouch. Makes it impossible for a park to have any landscaping but shrubbery and baby trees. I like the concept of parks over parking garages, but the execution leaves much to be desired. I like big trees.

Really? Who gives a shit about how tall it is? It could be a million feet tall; it's still horrible.
