I took a pre-memorial day weekend trip up to The Sleeping Bear Dunes N.L.S. my pops an old hand at backpacking. He had reserved a walk-in site in the park that even during the off season had to be booked 6 months in advance .. Had a great time the Sleeping Bear - Platte River Campground lived up to its hype as one of the best in the whole state.

I got some good pics perhaps if I have time ill post some over in general photography. While I was up north I got to check out Glen Arbor & Frankfort for the first time in years while grabbing food, the growth is pretty nuts considering the year-round population .. Spose the situation speaks for itself most new construction is driven by retirees & those building a 2nd home.

Marquette had been my favorite destination the past 2 summers I've gotten really lucky with the summers being so warm Up North even Lake Superior water temps were in the mid--70's (in shallow & especially sandy bays or the St. Mary's River). The Huron Mountains aren't really mountains falling about 20 ft short but they are rugged and have some of the greatest vertical rise in the midwest being a coastal range.

Don't get me wrong I have family that for a time lived at 7,500 & 6,500 ft in Incline Village, NV on the north shore of Lake Tahoe I've spent several summers living high enough that water boiled at a lower temp it made cooking a bit of a pain haha. So I know how puny midwestern mountains are comparatively, but damn it sometimes you gotta work with what you got! lol

^Sugarloaf & Hogsback Mountains (right to left) in the distance. Great places to hike views are spectacular tho Sugarloaf has a boardwalk & stairs so it's a bit more touristy than I liked but you can climb on the side of the stair ha.

here's a different aerial/drone view of Boise looking east toward Lucky Peak and Table Rock.

Plenty of room for more development in the foreground.

You know it's funny for some reason if you do a google images search for Houghton, MI you get a lot of pics of Boise. Ha ha.

Houghton - Hancock, MI

At first I thought the mountain in the distance was Brockway but now I'm not so sure Houghton is on the south half of the Keweenaw Peninsula so I believe the mountains in the distance are part of the Huron Range across Keweenaw Bay.

wow, that is freaky, especially since I used to visit Houghton (and Hancock and Calumet) every year when I was a kid.

thanks for the pics... those take me back.

I'll admit it did give me a strange sense of deja vu not quite twilight zone style no ones gonna look at Bosie or Houghton and feel a sense of foreboding haha. But seriously the timing of everything was a bit too perfect.

Toledo, Ohio

Detroit's lil brother to the south ... well that's not a totally accurate metaphor Toledo is the odd man out in the "well balanced" state of Ohio with it's 3 C's.

Despite having many of the same assets that helped Detroit's comeback and argueably less problems its rebound has been slower than hoped. The city has strong cultural institutions such as its nationally acclaimed zoo & museum not to mention The University of Toledo which has a large student population in the city.

While recent studies have classified Toledo as part of a Detroit - Toledo - Windsor mega-region the city struggles to forge its own identity in the shadow of its bigger neighbor while at the same time benefiting from being so close. Toledo has some great intact neighborhoods and one of the best downtown's out of any mid-sized city in the county.

*(This urban influence map based on commuting patterns was discussed some time ago) I think it's interesting how the automobile's dominance in the area plus geography gives Detroit an out-sized area influence.

Perhaps just like how Toledo isn't one of Ohio's 3 C's it's a Great Lake City the fact that its not even directly on the St. Lawrence Seaway plays into the role of being stuck in between so to speak. Although I will concede this is in all seriousness despite the excellent harbor that the estuary at the mouth of the Maumee River provides. haha

Here's some pic's I came across while dicking around on google.
