A little bit OT but does NYC have a museum of world history? If so I have never heard of one.

No. There's the New York Historical Society, which deals with historical topics of interest (sometimes, but not always, related to New York), and the Museum of the City of NY, which is basically the city's historical museum, but there's no entity dealing with world history.

I dislike it, i really don't think Piano had to go for a building that looks that much like a factory. I know it's cool and trendy to have buildings look industrial to fit in with context, but it's an eye-sore to me and the massing is silly looking to be honest.

i've always felt that way about it too, but for two points. one, its a modern art museum, so i suppose it should be somewhat wacky modern and two, its not done yet. the more i walk around it, the more wait and see i feel about it. its really a pretty complicated construction job.

De Blasio lobbys for NYC Obama museum

Quote:
Mayor Bill de Blasio wants President Obama’s museum and library established at New York City’s Columbia University.

Although the presidential library will most likely go to Obama’s hometown of Chicago, the mayor is lobbying for the museum following rumors that the president might move to NYC in 2017, according to the New York Post.

“The president went to Columbia, has a real affection for the city, and we obviously can guarantee not only a lot of support for such a museum, but a huge number of people from around the world would be able to visit it,” De Blasio said. “I’ve certainly let the Obama team know that we’re excited about the idea and we will do anything we can to be helpful.”

Yeah, I doubt that's ever going to happen. First New York City is suddenly bidding to host the Olympics and then now they have Obama's presidential library. I never knew De Blasio was such a realist.

Actually DeBlasio turned down the idea of hosting the Olympics.

Frick Collection Planning Huge Expansion on Upper East Side

Quote:
The Frick Collection has announced that it is a planning a major expansion that would increase the the museum's overall space by nearly a third. The 60,000 square feet of new construction would extend the famous mansion to the east and connect it with the museum's art reference library on East 71st. It would rise six stories — the same height as the tallest part of the existing structure — and be designed in the same Beaux-Arts style as the museum by Davis Brody Bond, the architectural firm that did the interiors at the 9/11 Museum. It would also include a roof garden with Central Park views.

New renderings for Frick expansion unveiled

Quote:
The expansion will grow the total space at 1 East 70th Street by roughly one-third — pending Landmarks Preservation Commission approval. Plans call for the new wing to connect the museum with the art reference library on East 71st Street. In the process a private, gated garden will be torn down, and a new rooftop garden will be created

The Whitney really is strange. Too industrial for me.

The frick addition is lovely.

High Line area seems to be the area that has the most unusual buildings in the city. I suppose the area is a must for architecture buffs to see.
