Could some of you perhaps give me your opinion on the best French cuisine in town? Thanks.

Depends on what sort of French you're looking for, but I'm consistently happy with Cassis. Suzette (on 4th) is run by the same folks, but I haven't been there enough to fully recommend it.

Nothing dinner-jacket-required fancy like La Chaumiere. I'm more looking for bistro type places I guess. Similar to Avec?

I will give Cassis a try. Thanks.

I think the best is probably Q Haute in Eau Claire. If you're into molecular gastronomy then that's the best place to go.

When in doubt, we go out for French.

Our go-to is Brasserie in Kensington.

Park, Avec and Cassis are all also excellent and none are stuffy like La Chaumiere. I can't put my finger on it, but Suzette has never really hit the right notes for us.

Wendy's has pretty good fries.

Joking aside, while I don't know about French food in Calgary, the French bakery in Canmore (Le fournil) is exceptional. If you are a fan of French food, you need to make a stop there next time you are going to the mountains.

I went to Guild last week and had a nice dinner. The sidewalk patio is absolutely lovely and I would definitely go there for afternoon/after-work/pre-game drinks and appetizers in the future. In terms of food, I wasn't disappointed but I wasn't blown away either. However, their menu is appealing and I would go back to try something else.

On the night, I had the Lamb Special and my friends shared the Pig's Head. The lamb dish was pleasant but I think it may have had goat cheese of which I'm personally not a fan. The rub used on the pig was delicious but the meat itself tasted rather standard. However, the service was excellent and I'm not yet prepared to class the food as just okay. I will try again.

for the Guild

I ate there during stampede and the pork shoulder sandwich was exceptional. Better than Al Forno and even Meat & Bread in Van in my opinion (both of which I consider to be quite good).

Saw on reddit that Boxwood is shutting down. Too bad they couldn't capitalize on all the Pokeman players.

What a shame! That was a great little restaurant/cafe. It gave the park a unique character.

Does anyone know what's going to replace Boxwood and the Drum and Monkey?

Wow, that Guild place is really impressive looking. Had no idea it was in part of the Bay store. Didn't try it but was out walking downtown tonight. Also I was quite impressed with how busy it was, every patio was basically full. There seems to be quite a few more recently also. Nice too see.

Taste of Calgary was also going on at EauClaire so it was busy all around.

It gave character, but after being completed unimpressed the last two times I went there the writing was on the wall in my opinion. It started off great but the food quality and service kept diminishing with every visit (and I probably ate there a dozen times since it opened, but hadn't in over a year)

That sucks about Boxwood, not too surprised though, it's been pretty empty every time I've gone by there, even the patio.

Does anyone know when the brew pub replacing the Drum / Bamboo is supposed to open?

Wow I loved going to Boxwood. This is a shame, it brought welcomed life to the park.

When the announcement about Boxwood closing came out the ownership group said something new would be going into the space, maybe even as quick as by the end of September. So we'll see soon enough.
