Get ready to Jenga: Austin's newest, tallest building sets groundbreaking
Jan 6, 2016, 2:29pm CST
INDUSTRIES & TAGS Commercial Real Estate, Residential Real Estate, Construction

The Independent — the off-kilter-styled luxury condo tower — has a groundbreaking scheduled for Monday, January 11, at the construction site near Third Street and West Avenue.

The $300 million, 58-story structure will be the tallest in Austin when it's completed in 2018. Balfour Beatty Construction has secured the general contractor assignment.

Austin’s soon-to-be tallest building breaks ground

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A major development project gets underway in Austin Monday morning. Today marks the ground breaking for The Independent, the tallest residential building west of the Mississippi passing the Austonian.

The former Austin Energy Control Center Building located at the corner of West and Third Streets will be demolished to make room for a 58 story 685 foot tall building that will be two feet and two stories taller than the Austonian.

A total of 370 units are already on sale. Prices start around $400,000 and go up to $3 million. Construction is expected to be complete by 2018.

Kevin, do you know what the plans are for the sub station in the lot to the south of here? I love this tower and I can't wait to watch it grow.

There aren't any plans to move the substation. They are just putting up an architecturally artsy wall around it.

Caissons are being placed. I'd say it's under construction now.

Crazy that this will be the 4th time that Austin has built a new tallest since 2000.

What a stupid pool! Look at all that space on the right where they could have put a really nice pool deck. Instead they cram some trendy infinity pool on a little tiny space and leave all that unused space as the roof of the garage. Stupid. Then there's all that ground space that could have been nice green space. Instead it's just planters crammed in between driveways. And there's no ground level retail (at least in those renderings). I hate this building. It's just another stack of boxes in a great city. It's tall... that's what it has going for it.

I generally agree.

However, the pool's location will allow for more daylight exposure, mitigating the building's own shadow.
